For over 30 years, Gersh Autism has empowered students on the autism spectrum to reach their full potential. Serving individuals aged 5‑21 across the U.S. and Puerto Rico, our network of K‑12 schools provides personalized education tailored to each student’s unique learning style. We offer comprehensive therapeutic services—speech, physical, occupational therapy, and more—along with vocational training for older students. Position: School Nurse The School Nurse will assess the health needs of students, develop emergency care and individual health plans, provide health information, and serve as a resource to parents, teachers, staff, and administrators. The role includes identifying health problems for referral, maintaining confidential health records, administering screenings, and ensuring compliance with state laws and district policies.
Responsibilities
Administers first aid to staff and students, including medication and specialized medical treatments for ill, medically fragile, and injured children.
Maintains students’ confidential files and records (e.g., health care plans, agency referrals, accident reports, immunization records).
Maintains contact with parents/guardians to advise them of changes in student health and recommend further medical or emotional intervention.
Administers mandated screenings (vision, dental, hearing, etc.) and refers medical conditions for appropriate care.
Assesses situations involving student safety, abuse (physical, sexual, drug, etc.) and other health‑related issues for compliance with legal requirements.
Collaborates with agencies and school safety team members to conduct site assessments and provide recommendations for safety and accessibility.
Collaborates with parents, students, teachers, staff, health care providers, and public agencies to promote student health services.
Counsels students and families on health conditions and lifestyle issues (mental health, pregnancy, STDs, substance abuse, etc.) to facilitate healthier students.
Develops individual student health care and emergency care plans for students with special care needs.
Implements health care plans for students with chronic health problems and accommodation requirements.
Schedule: Monday‑Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.
Must be able to sit for long periods and move freely throughout the building without restrictions.
Must handle aggressive children and keep students safe from themselves and others; may need to implement CPI (therapeutic hold) procedures.
Must be able to remove themselves from potentially harmful situations and, when necessary, lift a child.
Requirements
Minimum of 2 years’ experience as a RN (Registered Nurse) or LPN (Licensed Practical Nurse).
Experience in pediatrics and/or public health nursing.
Bachelor of Science in Nursing preferred.
Currently licensed by the State of New York; must hold CPR/First Aid Certificate/BLS.
Salary RN: $70,000–$80,000 LPN: $60,000–$70,000
