Your Opportunity Possesses a working knowledge of and is responsible for overseeing all aspects of preventative maintenance and other maintenance and repairs of machinery and mechanical equipment. Supervises, trains and coordinates activities for maintenance employees. Schedules maintenance work, keeps a clean work environment, and accurate records.

Responsibilities

Directs daily maintenance work activities of employees in assigned equipment areas and sets up any additional work maintenance schedules.

Provides front‑line supervision for maintenance employees and maintenance contractors.

Follows standard operating maintenance instructions/procedures in the performance of any and all maintenance tasks, including replacing, adjusting, installing any feed‑mill equipment.

Continuously maintains awareness of any maintenance problems and develops strategies and procedures to correct existing problems and help eliminate future maintenance related issues or reduce unscheduled downtime.

Works with the Feed Mill Manager and Shift Supervisors to develop, implement and coordinate a plant‑wide preventative and predictive maintenance (PM) program to ensure maximum equipment life and minimal downtime while remaining cost‑effective.

Maintains accurate records.

Oversees training of maintenance technicians and millwrights.

Leads and organizes maintenance technicians in the completion of all tasks.

Maintains an adequate, cost‑effective inventory of spare parts.

Develops and communicates consistent parts replacement or repair guidelines.

Provides cost estimates as necessary to the Feed Mill Manager.

Monitors all repairs to ensure all warranty costs are covered.

Interfaces with boiler, chemical and insurance representatives to ensure the integrity of water softeners, boilers and related equipment.

Coordinates and communicates with all departments to ensure maintenance needs are properly addressed.

Manages imminent maintenance projects.

Coordinates and schedules annual boiler inspection.

Coordinates and schedules bi‑annual manlift inspection.

Oversees and maintains proper records for the State Department of Air Quality.

Coordinates, schedules and performs yearly fire extinguisher inspection.

Promotes safety including housekeeping practices, tools, equipment and facility.

Utilizes downtime effectively for solutions to repair/maintain equipment.

Assists Feed Mill as needed regarding milling operations and procedures.

Ensures compliance with all environmental laws and procedures to which Smithfield Hog Production subscribes.

Understands and complies with company SIPS, EMS and BMS policies and procedures while performing job duties.

Provides and performs required training of the maintenance staff on all safety, environmental, procedural and equipment operation procedures.

Performs all required reassessments of procedures in LTT, confined spaces, hot work, tank integrity and other assessments.

Works with management to operate within budget on all R&M operations.

Reports all environmental issues immediately to supervisor.

Reads and understands the company's emergency notification process and reviews that policy at the work site.

Completes daily duties in a manner that maintains compliance and seeks opportunities for improvement within the Smithfield local Animal Food Safety Plan.

Assists in 5‑year planning of major capital projects including capital budgeting, equipment planning and selection, and coordination of service and installation of equipment or projects.

All other tasks and duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree from an accredited four‑year college or university, and 5+ years relevant maintenance experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

2+ years experience in electrical troubleshooting and repair, welding and plumbing.

Electrician license helpful but not required.

Able to perform troubleshooting, repair and assembly of any feed‑mill equipment including electrical issues: solid‑state circuitry, 110 V control circuits, lighting circuits, VFD and soft‑start drives and 3‑phase circuitry.

Able to read and speak English to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.

Good leadership skills.

Good verbal and written communication skills.

Good organizational skills.

Self‑motivated and able to work alone and unsupervised.

Available to be on‑call when scheduled.

Able to work evenings, weekends and holidays when scheduled.

Able to work an average 50‑hour week with an average 10‑hour workday, which can vary frequently.

Ability to work well with others in a fast‑paced, dynamic environment.

Ability to be respectful, approachable and team‑oriented while building strong working relationships and a positive work environment.

Supervisory Responsibilities

Provides leadership and guidance to employees in the Maintenance Department.

Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws.

Responsible for interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and assisting in providing appropriate resolutions.

Work Environment & Physical Demands

Must be able to frequently lift 50 pounds, occasionally 100 pounds.

Must be able to work at heights up to 200 ft.

Must be able to frequently climb a ladder and work from a ladder.

Must be able to frequently climb over, under and around Feed Mill areas.

Must be able to walk and stand on concrete and unpaved areas for long periods of time.

Must be able to tolerate mill dust, mill odors, and frequently noisy conditions.

Must be able to tolerate extreme ranges of seasonal temperatures (hot to cold).

Must be able to work with and around a wide range of chemicals and different feed ingredients.

Must understand that Smithfield is a producer of high‑quality pork for human consumption and must be supportive of the mission of raising swine for meat.
