The Legislative Assistant is an unclassified position that supports DCFS legislative relations and policy coordination year-round, with intensified workload during Regular Legislative Session. The role helps DCFS plan, track, and respond to state and federal legislative activity affecting agency programs, budget, and operations. This position coordinates information flow between leadership, program subject matter experts, external stakeholders, and legislators and legislative staff, and helps ensure timely, accurate briefings and responses. This position will require statewide travel and attending community and stakeholder events, which could occur after hours and/or on weekends.

Preferred experience includes demonstrated understanding of the Louisiana legislative process, strong writing and document management skills, and the ability to coordinate across multiple teams under time-sensitive conditions.

Work Schedule:

Typically, work hours are 8:00 am to 4:30 pm, Monday – Friday. You also may be required to work after hours and/or on weekends.

Compensation:

Hourly Range $30.65/hr-$50/hr

Work Location:

The domicile of this vacancy will be based in Baton Rouge, La. This position will also require statewide travel and attending community and stakeholder events.

Responsibilities:

Track bills and amendments relevant to DCFS, maintain internal trackers and status reports, and flag items needing action.

Coordinate legislative requests and due-outs, route inquiries to the appropriate program leads, and monitor deadlines through completion.

Draft and assemble legislative briefing materials, including fact sheets, issue briefs, talking points, testimony packets, and meeting preparation notes.

Support legislative engagement logistics, including scheduling, meeting set-up, committee hearing preparation, and follow-up documentation.

Log and track legislator-referred constituent service issues and ensure accurate handoffs and status updates to internal points of contact.
