Position
Firefighter / Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), Firefighter / Certified, and Firefighter Cadet positions at the City of Rocky Mount Fire Department. Overview
The City of Rocky Mount Fire Department responds to emergency calls 24/7, providing fire suppression, rescue, emergency medical services, hazardous materials mitigation, technical rescue, code enforcement, fire investigation, and public education. Respond to fires using appropriate firefighting techniques. Respond to emergency medical calls, perform patient assessments, follow proper protocols, and document patient care. Maintain current firefighting and emergency medical certifications. Assist with maintenance checks, inventories, and ensure readiness of assigned apparatus. Maintain required level of physical fitness. Assist with public education classes on fire safety and prevention. Participate in the hydrant maintenance program and in the maintenance of the fire station building and grounds. Participate in continuing education activities and assist with engine company business inspections. Perform other related duties as assigned. Qualifications
Must be at least 18 years of age on date of hire. Must possess a High School Diploma or GED from an accredited school. Must possess a valid driver’s license issued by the State of North Carolina. Must pass a physical agility test and have visual acuity of 20/100 or better, corrected to 20/20. Candidates will be subject to a criminal background check upon offer of employment. Must have the ability to meet current requirements set forth by the National Fire Protection Association and the North Carolina Fire and Rescue Commission. Must possess appropriate state EMS certification (or be able to obtain within set time frame). Knowledge of emergency medical protocols, procedures, standards, and policies; knowledge of relevant federal, state, and local laws and ordinances; knowledge of the operation of specialized fire service equipment. Skill in analyzing problems and identifying solutions; preparing clear and accurate reports; establishing cooperative working relationships; setting priorities for competing projects; performing mathematical calculations; operating computers and other office equipment; interpersonal relations; oral and written communication. Pay Range (Full‑Time)
Firefighter / EMT: $54,943.92 – $82,415.88 Firefighter / Certified: $52,327.54 – $78,491.32 Firefighter / Cadet: $49,835.76 – $74,753.63 Pay Rate (Part‑Time)
Firefighter / Cadet: $17.00 per hour Firefighter / Certified: $18.50 per hour Firefighter / EMT I: $20.00 per hour Hiring Information
Open positions are available for Full‑Time and Part‑Time, depending on department needs and candidate qualifications. Physical Demands & Work Environment
Heavy physical work is required, including walking, running, stooping, kneeling, squatting, crawling, climbing, lifting of equipment, pulling of hoses, manipulation of nozzles, carrying, reaching, and balancing. Work is performed in a fire station and at emergency scenes, with exposure to noise, dust, chemicals, inclement weather, and dangerous conditions. Specialized protective equipment, such as a self‑contained breathing apparatus, is used.
