Position Summary The Regional Hub Node (RHN) Network Engineer is a key role within the Technical Management Division responsible for the design, planning, implementation, and maintenance of our enterprise-wide network infrastructure within the RHNs. The position requires a deep understanding of networking principles, protocols, and security best practices to ensure a secure, reliable, and high-performance network that supports our mission‑critical systems and services. The RHN is a non‑standard network system that demands strong analytical, creative problem‑solving, and critical thinking skills. The Network Engineer will work under the general direction of the Chief Engineer, owning the technical aspects of assigned projects and contributing to the overall strategic direction of the network.

Key Responsibilities

Network Design and Architecture:

Design and architect robust, scalable, and secure network solutions across the enterprise. This includes collaborating with stakeholders to understand business requirements and translating them into technical specifications.

Implementation and Configuration:

Implement, configure, and maintain network infrastructure components, including routers, switches, firewalls, and wireless access points. This encompasses new deployments, upgrades, and ongoing maintenance.

Network Security:

Implement and enforce network security policies, procedures, and standards. This includes applying Security Technical Implementation Guides (STIGs), managing firewalls, intrusion detection/prevention systems, and VPNs.

IOS Management:

Manage the lifecycle of Cisco IOS and other network operating systems, including testing new releases, deploying upgrades, and ensuring compatibility with existing infrastructure.

Troubleshooting and Issue Resolution:

Provide Tier‑3 support for complex network issues, identifying root causes and implementing effective solutions in a timely manner.

Documentation and Best Practices:

Develop and maintain comprehensive network documentation, including network diagrams, configuration files, and standard operating procedures. Ensure adherence to industry best practices.

Project Leadership:

Lead and contribute to network‑related projects, coordinating with internal teams and external vendors to ensure successful and on‑time delivery.

Capacity Planning and Performance Optimization:

Monitor network performance, identify bottlenecks, and implement capacity planning and optimization strategies to ensure optimal performance for critical applications.

Strategic Planning Contribution:

Participate in high‑level enterprise architecture planning, evaluation, and integration discussions, contributing technical expertise to inform strategic network decisions.

Required Skills & Expertise

Routing Protocols: Expertise in OSPF and BGP, including advanced configuration (route redistribution, policy‑based routing, route summarization) and troubleshooting.

Multicast: Solid understanding and practical experience with Multicast routing protocols and technologies.

MPLS: Knowledge of MPLS technologies, including LDP, RSVP‑TE, and MPLS VPNs.

Quality of Service (QoS): Experience designing and implementing QoS policies to prioritize network traffic and ensure optimal performance for critical applications.

Layer 2 Protocols: Strong understanding of Spanning‑Tree Protocol (STP) and its variants (RSTP, MSTP), VLANs, and other Layer 2 technologies.

Layer 3 Protocols: Proficiency with Layer 3 protocols, including IP addressing, subnetting, routing protocols (OSPF, BGP), and IPsec VPNs.

Network Security: Solid understanding of network security principles and best practices, including firewalls, intrusion detection/prevention systems, and VPNs.

General Networking Knowledge: Solid foundation in client/server environments, network‑wide file system design, and the OSI model.

Qualifications

Minimum 5+ years of experience in network engineering.

Minimum Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP) or equivalent certification is highly desirable.

Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem‑solving skills.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Familiarity with scripting languages (e.g., Python, Perl) for network automation.
