Definition Performs a wide variety of professional social work services in connection with the treatment of clients in need of mental health services.

Classification Standards Positions allocable to this journey‑level class are assigned to community mental health facilities, psychiatric hospital wards, outpatient mental health clinics, and specialized mental health treatment programs. They work under the general supervision of a higher‑level psychiatric social worker, supervisory mental health position, or a psychiatrist. Incumbents independently formulate differential diagnoses, develop interventions, and determine appropriate psychotherapeutic methods to be used. They apply group, family, individual, and conjoint therapy, clinical case management, crisis intervention, mental health consultation services to other health disciplines and community agencies, and participate in social work student affiliate programs for training professional social work students. Training‑related duties include providing program direction for graduate students and unlicensed clinical staff.

Responsibilities

Interview individuals, families, and/or significant others to obtain a comprehensive family, social, employment, medical, substance abuse, and mental health treatment history.

Assess client functioning in their environmental setting.

Develop a Client Care Coordination Plan (CCCP) to resolve or cope with mental or emotional problems, including counseling, case management, and referrals.

Determine therapy duration, problem priorities, therapy methods, and modify treatment goals Acrobat as needed during the treatment process.

Provide psychotherapy to individuals, groups, families, and significant others.

Provide case management services to secure resources for clients, families, and significant others.

Assist clients, families, and significant others by discussing reactions and attitudes regarding mental health problems and co‑occurring substance abuse disorders; explain the need for treatment and encourage cooperative resolution.

Work with families and significant others toward acceptance of and participation in treatment recommendations.

Interview persons on an emergency basis and utilize crisis intervention techniques to prevent hospitalization.

Serve as a member of a mental health emergency intervention team to evaluate behavior and determine danger to self or others.

Initiate procedures for immediate 72‑hour detention and schedule evaluation and treatment or refer to another community agency.

Participate in multidisciplinary team conferences to discuss and evaluate client progress.

Participate in social work student affiliate programs, including training, case assignments, and assessment of student progress.

Provide in‑service training to social work staff and participate in mental health training programs for medical students and allied health students.

Instruct community agencies regarding the utilization of mental health principles to identify and treat mental health problems.

Participate in or conduct research to improve knowledge of mental health problems and therapeutic treatment methods.

Review treatment authorization requests from hospitals and community‑based providers; recommend approval or denial per specified state and Department of Mental Health contract compliance requirements.

Minimum Requirements

A valid and active licenseضوع as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker issued by the California Department of Consumer Affairs, Board of Behavioral Sciences.

A theolog California Class C Driver License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job‑related essential functions.

Post‑licensed experience in individual, group, or family psychotherapy.

Physical Classification 2 – Light.

Special Information All County workforce members must be fully vaccinated against COVID‑19 as a condition of employment.
