Under immediate supervision, is responsible for performing skilled work operating light to heavy equipment used to excavate, load, transfer, or move dirt, gravel, or other material in the maintenance or construction of parks, streets, and other public properties. May exercise functional supervision over assigned staff.

Work Hours 7:15 a.m. – 6:00 p.m., Monday – Thursday or Tuesday – Friday.
Responsibilities
Operate a 10 acre or less dump truck to and from work locations, construction sites, etc.
Operate various types of road construction equipment such as skid loader, flat wheel roller, pneumatic roller sweepers, and oil distributors.
Perform minor maintenance and service checks on equipment.
Perform unskilled and semi‑skilled labor work related to various maintenance and construction activities such as pot‑hole repair, base and pavement repair, and street maintenance.
Prepare a daily log of activities.
Clean and remove debris from streets, drainage, ditches, and other areas, frequently lifting materials weighing up to 50 pounds.
Remove brush and trash from drainage inlets.
Transport tools and equipment to and from work sites.
Assist in the placement of barricades, signs, flashers, and safety cones.
Perform related duties and fulfill responsibilities as required.
Qualifications
Formal or informal education or training that ensures the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance.
One (1) year of experience operating light, medium, or heavy equipment or completion of an SA: Ready to Work CDL training program.
Must obtain a Valid Texas Commercial Class "B" Driver's License plus all required endorsements within six (6) months of employment.
Preferred Qualifications
Class "A" or Class "B" Commercial Driver's License.
Three (3)+ years' experience in all aspects of street construction / reconstruction.
Three (3)+ years' experience with hot and/or cold mix asphalt placement.
Three (3)+ years' experience repairing potholes with patch truck.
Three (3)+ years' experience operating medium to heavy equipment (i.e., front‑end loader, skid loader, double drum roller, pneumatic roller, etc.).
Applicant Information
Applicants are permitted to substitute two years of related full‑time experience for one year of higher education or one year of related higher education for two years of experience to meet the minimum requirements.
Applicants selected for employment with the City of San Antonio in this position must receive satisfactory results from pre‑employment drug testing and background checks. If required for the position, a physical, motor vehicle record evaluation, and additional background checks may be conducted.
Applicants claiming military service to meet the experience requirement may attach a DD214 to the application.

Knowledge of operating characteristics and limitations of the equipment being operated.
Knowledge of basic construction methods and practices.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co‑workers, supervisors, and the general public.
Ability to understand and follow instructions.
Ability to communicate clearly and effectively.
Ability to perform all the physical requirements of the position, with or without accommodations.
Working conditions are primarily outside in a construction site environment with frequent exposure to temperature extremes, traffic construction dust, damp/wet surfaces, overhead power lines, high noise, oily surfaces, liquid asphalt, and lime.
