MAINTENANCE ASSISTANT

Founded in 1983, Austin Street Center provides emergency shelter and meets the basic needs of the most vulnerable people experiencing homelessness in Dallas.
Position Purpose The Maintenance Assistant ensures everything is in good working condition on the whole campus and maintains a safe and functional environment for clients and staff. The role works with all areas of the organization to address maintenance needs, perform repairs, and identify when outside vendors are required.
Responsibilities
Input data into computer software programs
Perform basic repairs to the shelter such as plumbing, electrical fixtures, broken appliances/equipment, and other minor repairs
Provide maintenance to interior and exterior of the shelter including painting, carpentry, grounds clean-up, and new equipment/furniture installation
General janitorial tasks as needed and assigned
Bathroom coordination/clean up (e.g., mop floors, restock toilet paper, paper towels and hand soap)
Change light bulbs and HVAC filters as needed
Pick up supplies and donations for the shelter as needed
Report to Facilities Manager any concerns that need repairs and, if necessary, secure the area to reduce risk of injury to clients or staff
Skills & Qualifications
Basic computer skills, including use of Microsoft Word and Excel
General maintenance skills such as plumbing, electrical, carpentry, and equipment maintenance
Valid Texas Driver’s License and clean Motor Vehicle Record
Ability to lift 50+ pounds; tasks may involve climbing a ladder, bending, lifting, and carrying heavy items
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Flexibility and ability to work under time constraints
Ability to work independently and use problem‑solving skills
Additional Experience a Plus
License in plumbing, HVAC, electrical or related trade
