Position Overview The Medical Respiratory Intensive Care Unit (MRICU) is a 28‑bed adult ICU specializing in the care of patients with multisystem organ failure and complex pulmonary needs. Patients include COPD, ARDS, status asthmaticus, pneumonia, sepsis, gastrointestinal bleeds, diabetic ketoacidosis, oncologic, acute kidney and liver dysfunction, and acid‑base and metabolic imbalances. Through true collaboration with the interprofessional team, MRICU nurses translate evidence‑based practice, quality improvement, and research into bedside clinical care, advancing safe and quality care for all patients.

Unit Details

Located in Critical Care Hospital – 4th floor.

1:1 and 1:2 nurse‑to‑patient ratios with charge nurse, unlicensed assistive personnel, and unit secretary support 24/7.

Requires complex medical and pulmonary patients, post‑codes, sepsis, GI bleeds, DKA, renal and liver failure, and bedside procedures and advanced pulmonary and invasive interventions.

Clinical Nurse Levels & Responsibilities Clinical Nurse I

Integrates technical skills and theoretical knowledge to meet patient and family needs.

Assists the health care team with prevention of illness and injury, maintenance of wellness, and provision of comfort.

Provides direction, education, and beginnings of leadership skills at the unit level.

Delivers and accurately documents direct, age‑specific care based on medical orders and a multidisciplinary plan of care.

Safely administers prescribed medications, identifying incompatibilities and/or interactions.

Clinical Nurse II

Demonstrates mastery of clinical skills and applies knowledge to a specific patient population.

Recognizes changes in patient situations and intervenes appropriately.

Mobilizes resources to meet individualized needs of patient/families.

Provides direction, education, and assumes leadership responsibilities at the unit level.

Delivers and accurately documents direct, age‑specific care based on medical orders and a multidisciplinary plan of care.

Safely administers prescribed medications, identifying incompatibilities and/or interactions.

Clinical Nurse III

Demonstrates clinical knowledge at the unit level and applies it to a specific patient population.

Anticipates changes in patient situations and intervenes appropriately.

Provides direction, education, and serves as a role model in a clinical setting.

Delivers and accurately documents direct, age‑specific care based on medical orders and a multidisciplinary plan of care.

Safely administers prescribed medications, identifying incompatibilities and/or interactions.

Licensure, Certification, and Registration Requirements

Current RN licensure in Virginia or eligible or compact state for Clin I, II, III.

AHA BLS HCP Certification or equivalent for continued employment.

Experience Requirements

Clin I: N/A.

Clin II: 12 to 24 months RN experience.

Clin III: 3 years of clinical experience.

Experience Preferred

Clin I: Experience as an LPN, nursing assistant, or care partner in acute care or applicable area.

Clin II & III: Academic Health Care Experience; experience with similar patient population or acute care.

Education/Training Requirements

Clin I, II, III: Diploma or Associates Degree from a professional nursing program recognized and approved by the state Board of Nursing.

All RNs without a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing must enroll in an approved RN to BSN program within two years of start date and complete within five years unless grandfathered.

Education/Training Preferred

Completion of a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (or higher) from an accredited program for Clin I, II, III.

Certification in specialty area for Clin III.

Additional Position Requirements

Clin I, II, III: Clinicians work all three shifts, weekends and holidays. Individual shift rotation and schedules established with Nurse Manager/Practice Manager.

Schedules and shift rotations may be adjusted to meet unit requirements.

Physical & Mental Requirements

Physical: Lifting 20‑50 lbs. Exposure to hazardous and infectious substances.

Activities: Prolonged standing, sitting, frequent bending, walking, climbing stairs/steps, reaching overhead, repetitive motions.

Mental/Sensory: Strong recall, reasoning, problem solving, hearing, speaking clearly, writing legibly, reading, logical thinking.

Emotional: Fast‑paced environment, steady pace, multiple priorities, intense customer interactions, noisy environment.
