Overview The Addictions Counselor works daily in partnership with the Clinician and the Director of Crisis Services to monitor clients while they are participating in the Rapid Access Center (RAC) programs including the Crisis Receiving and Stabilization and/or the Sub-acute Detox Program. The position supports existing services and helps develop new approaches to address the issues surrounding this population, including Mobile Crisis Response Team, Crisis Hotline, and Crisis Stabilization Center. The Counselor provides direct support, treatment, and guidance to individuals struggling with substance use disorders and other addictive behaviors. The role involves helping clients understand the underlying causes of their addiction, develop coping strategies, and work toward recovery and healthier lifestyles. The Counselor does not have supervisory responsibilities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Patient Assessment and Evaluation: Assess client’s physical, mental and emotional health, severity of addiction, substance abuse history and develop tailored treatment plans.

Treatment Planning: Develop individualized recovery plans including therapy, behavioral interventions and referrals to resources (medical care, social services).

Counseling and Therapy: Provide one‑on‑one or group therapy sessions to address addiction, coping mechanisms, and co‑occurring mental health disorders such as anxiety, depression or trauma.

Education: Educate clients and families about addiction, effects, recovery process, and relapse prevention.

Support: Offer emotional and psychological support throughout recovery, keeping clients motivated.

Crisis Intervention: Manage crises and provide immediate support in relapse or severe withdrawal situations.

Collaboration and Communication: Work closely with multidisciplinary team—physicians, nurses, healthcare providers—to ensure coordinated care.

Compliance and Continuous Learning: Adhere to healthcare regulations, participate in professional development, follow protocols, keep documentation accurate and timely in the EHR.

Perform other duties as assigned and/or at other locations.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in psychology, social work, counseling or related field.

Valid and current Indiana state license/certification from NBCC and/or NAADAC.

Preferred experience in primary care, mental health or emergency medicine.

Preferred experience with electronic medical records (EMR).

Strong clinical reasoning and decision‑making skills.

Ability to work collaboratively with a healthcare team, communicate effectively with patients, and independently.

Flexibility to work any shift.

Knowledge of behavioral health, substance abuse clientele, de‑escalation techniques, empathy.

Excellent written and verbal skills; maintain professional rapport in crisis.

Customer‑focused philosophy, organizational skills, and computer proficiency (Microsoft Office, internet research).

Understanding of addiction treatment methods (12‑step, CBT, motivational interviewing).

Attendance at required in‑house/out‑of‑town training.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

Indiana state license/certification from NBCC and/or NAADAC.

Valid driver’s license per EH motor vehicle policy.

CPR Certification.

CPI Certification.

Physical Demands

Lift 50 pounds.

Prolonged sitting at desk, standing at events, driving within service area.

Frequent lifting and setting up for events.

Prolonged computer use (typing, designing).

Conditions of Employment

Completion of tuberculin screening, MMR, Varicella, influenza and COVID‑19 vaccines.
