Job Description
Seeking a dynamic and passionate Family and Consumer Sciences (FACS) Teacher to join the Alexandria City Public Schools team. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in family and consumer sciences education and a commitment to fostering students' personal, academic, and career development. This 10‑month, 195 day Licensed position reports to the School Principal. This position is for the current 2025‑2026 school year.
Qualifications
Education:
A Bachelor's Degree from an Accredited College or University in a Related Field Required; Master’s Degree Preferred.
Certificates & Licenses:
A Valid Virginia Department of Education Teaching Provisional, Collegiate, or PostGraduate License with an endorsement in Family and Consumer Science. A Valid Technical Professional License with an endorsement in a specialized Family and Consumer Sciences area, or eligibility to obtain the Teaching or Technical Professional License with the appropriate FACS endorsement upon hiring. ServSafe and Food Handling Certifications are preferred.
Other Qualifications:
Must have at least two years of experience in the culinary arts area.
Must have the knowledge and experience to systematically plan, execute and evaluate individual and group instruction.
Must be able to organize and manage appropriate classroom instruction.
Must possess excellent organizational, communications, public relations and planning skills.
The ability to work independently and accomplish established instructional objectives during the school year is essential.
Must have the ability to establish and maintain professional working relationships and work in a collaborative manner with administrators, supervisors, co‑workers and parents.
Must be knowledgeable of innovative, nontraditional teaching strategies that have proven successful with students from diverse backgrounds performing at different academic levels.
Some experience with Microsoft Office, online learning management software, Internet and Intranet is required.
Essential Functions
Develop and implement engaging curriculum aligned with Virginia state standards for Family and Consumer Sciences at the middle school or high school level.
Create a positive and inclusive learning environment that supports students' individual growth and development.
Utilize a variety of instructional strategies, including hands‑on activities, labs, and technology, to meet the diverse needs of students.
Foster students' leadership skills through participation in school‑based or virtual enterprises, job shadowing, internships, cooperative education, and/or the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA).
Provide opportunities for students to explore personal and career goals, financial management, clothing maintenance, food preparation, positive relationships, and self‑assessment.
Integrate Mathematics, Science, English, Social Sciences, Fine Arts, and Technology into Family and Consumer Sciences curriculum.
Collaborate with colleagues to promote cross‑curricular connections and enhance student learning experiences.
Assess student progress and provide timely feedback to support their academic growth and achievement.
Participate in professional development activities to stay current with best practices in family and consumer sciences education.
Communicate effectively with students, parents, and other stakeholders to support students’ success in the classroom and beyond.
Compensation
Step Placement and Salary for this position is determined by the ACPS Teachers and Other Licensed Staff Salary Scale.
Clearances
Criminal Justice Fingerprint/Background Clearance.
Tuberculosis Skin Test.
Public Health Compliance – Must follow safety and health protocols.
