The Sleep Lab Technician performs comprehensive sleep testing and analysis, and associated interventions under the general supervision of the Medical Director and/or Cardiopulmonary Supervisor or designee. Responsibilities include: Accurately applies appropriate sensors and monitoring devices to the patient according to laboratory standards and ensures electrode impedances meet laboratory standards. Writes a comprehensive patient history gathering appropriate information from patient, patient’s record and family members to include any sleep disturbances and explains test procedures. Performs polysomnograms according to laboratory standards: PSG with or without CPAP or BiPAP, multiple sleep latency test, split‑night PSG. Determines and initiates appropriate treatment modalities/interventions per physician order or protocol. Recognizes artifacts, documents them, eliminates or takes proper measures to monitor the artifact. Facilitates high‑quality recording while supporting routine and emergency patient needs. Observes, monitors and documents all pertinent data on the patient’s medical record before, during and after the procedure according to laboratory standards. Identifies normal or abnormal wake‑sleep patterns and clinical events, tabulates and analyzes the data, and generates an analysis summary that accurately reflects recorded and scored data. Assists the Cardiopulmonary Services Director in the development and ongoing review of policies, procedures and protocols for the Sleep Laboratory. Provides public awareness education and shares knowledge, skills and contributions willingly with associates. Maintains current knowledge and competence through educational activities and seeks clinical or technical experience relevant to role responsibilities. Applies basic infection control standards for patients and equipment, including electrode care. Keeps equipment clean and in proper working order, knows appropriate calibrations, how to make adjustments, and can troubleshoot equipment problems or report them promptly. Demonstrates positive interpersonal skills with patients, families, lab staff and other health‑care team members. Consults with various health‑care providers in a timely manner and suggests appropriate referrals to ensure continuity of care and timely interventions. Has a working knowledge of techniques and treatment modalities for patients of varying ages from adolescent to geriatric. Provides effective education to patients and their families.
