Engineering Technician - Design-Bridge Squad

The Department of Transportation, District 3, plays a vital role in the upkeep of Pennsylvania's highways and is currently seeking to fill the position of Engineering Technician. In this role, you will undertake a variety of entry‑level technical responsibilities within PennDOT, focusing on design, construction, and maintenance initiatives. Your primary task is to provide engineering support to different units while gaining insight into the department's policies, procedures, and operational workflows. You will participate in a structured training program that includes rotational assignments across various engineering districts, enabling you to familiarise yourself with district personnel and processes while actively contributing to ongoing work projects.
Classroom instruction will be provided in accordance with the program coordinator's directives, ensuring all activities are rigorously assessed for thoroughness, technical precision, and methodological integrity. You will engage in technical drafting tasks, producing highway plans from field survey data, designing minor highway projects from the initial engineering phase through the final plan, and completing minor design assignments under the supervision of a civil engineer, highway designer, or drafter. Your work will utilize Computer Aided Drafting and Design (CADD) software to enhance efficiency and accuracy.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:
Full‑time employment
Work hours are 7:30 AM to 3:30 PM, Monday–Friday, with a 30‑minute lunch break
Telework:
You may have the opportunity to work from home part‑time upon successful completion of the probationary period. To telework you must have a securely configured high‑speed Internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania. If you cannot telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Montoursville. The ability to telework is subject to change at any time.
Salary:
New employees start at a salary of $40,685.00 per year (before taxes)

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:
An associate degree in surveying, drafting, design, civil, or another appropriate field of engineering technology
Applicants will be considered to have met the educational requirements once they are within 3 months of graduating with a qualifying degree
