Patient Monitoring Technician – full‑time day shift Join to apply for the Patient Monitoring Technician – full‑time day shift role at WVU Medicine.

This position monitors assigned patients via video and cardiac telemetry to enhance patient safety and notify staff of activity that places patients at risk. The technician documents patient activity, performs extensive dysrhythmia interpretation, and communicates with nursing units and interdisciplinary team members.

Core Duties and Responsibilities

Perform cardiac monitoring for telemetry and hard‑wire monitored patients that are routed to the centralized Telemetry Surveillance Unit, visually monitoring between 32 and 50 patients per station.

Complete quarterly competencies and annual required CBLs within the dedicated timeframe.

Monitor, identify changes, address alarms for abnormal heart rhythm variations, and report patient’s cardiac rhythm or life‑threatening events to medical and nursing staff.

Analyze, interpret, and measure ECG strip waveform displays and document each patient’s rhythm every four hours via Wave Strip Export, along with any changes and report changes per established guidelines.

Monitor centralized pulse oximetry for general pediatric population and adult orthopedic patients when indicated.

Maintain accurate patient information within the Telemetry Surveillance Unit.

Support indirect patient care by assembling telemetry packs – including batteries and electrodes – for nursing staff, ensuring proper installation and battery charge, managing inventory, maintaining equipment cleanliness, and coordinating patient equipment assignments.

Assure patient safety by identifying and prioritizing tasks by importance.

Demonstrate professional telephone etiquette by courteously answering calls, clearly identifying self and department, and promptly relaying accurate, well‑documented messages.

Perform video monitoring of patients who meet the criteria and deliver/install wireless cameras.

Document patient interventions in the electronic medical record every four hours.

Communicate imminent signs of patient risk to assigned staff via the alarm system and/or wireless phone.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent.

Successful completion of assigned training and education with passing scores on all exams/tests.

Preferred Qualifications

Graduate of Technical Education Program or Medical Assistant Program.

Obtain certification in HeartSaver or Basic Life Support within thirty days of hire date.

Physical Requirements

Minimal physical activity required.

Sit for long periods of time.

Vision (corrected) and hearing within normal limits.

Visually monitor several monitor screens with multiple cardiac rhythms, pulse oximetry waveforms, and/or patients for sustained periods of time.

Working Environment

Working closely with co‑workers and able to communicate effectively with the entire healthcare team.

Skills and Abilities

Ability to troubleshoot technology with biomedical engineering and clinical staff.

Ability to work as a cooperative, focused team player, take direction well, and have a positive attitude when working with patients, nursing staff, and physicians.

Good organizational skills and the ability to multitask to keep track of a large number of patients.

Ability to maintain and keep a safe work area.

Basic computer knowledge and skills.

Good verbal and writing skills.
