LEGAL ASSISTANT II
Thurston County Prosecuting Attorney's Office is seeking three (3) highly motivated and qualified individuals for Legal Assistant II positions in the Criminal Division. The salary for this position is $4,446 - $5,914 monthly.
Working Conditions
Work Environment – Office, minimal physical exertion.
Schedule – Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.; occasional work outside hours.
Travel Requirements – Occasional travel for meetings or training.
Customer Interactions – Substantial public contact; may encounter irate or highly emotional individuals.
Responsibilities
Perform essential functions of Legal Assistant I classification.
Prepare, file, serve, and edit legal documents from verbal or standing instructions.
Develop procedures for handling and locating files from intake through appellate processes; organize and maintain case files; review court rules; initiate necessary documents; maintain statistical records; certify disposition of cases.
Review court files for completeness; conduct basic legal research; investigate records; recommend legal action.
Locate addresses for defendants; determine restitution amounts; maintain monitoring files; present documents for judge's signature or attend court.
Serve as liaison to witnesses, victims, experts; maintain contact with victims, law enforcement, court personnel, and others.
Receive and review incoming mail; compose responses to routine inquiries; route correspondence to attorneys.
Determine discoverability of information; serve information in compliance with statutes; respond to public record requests.
Interview witnesses, victims, and public; analyze information; guide individuals through court procedures; coordinate testimony and travel arrangements.
Possess knowledge of Washington State law.
Provide direction, assistance, and guidance to other staff; assist in training new staff; cover for absences.
Coordinate activities for supervisor; understand office positions for coverage.
Qualifications
High school diploma or GED.
Associate degree in legal assistant or paralegal studies, or related, and/or paralegal certificate from accredited program.
Or, four (4) years of progressively responsible legal experience, including two years as Legal Assistant I; or equivalent education and experience.
Typing speed 60 words per minute.
Desired Skills
Strong technical skill set; effective use of case management systems and Microsoft Office.
Superior written, oral, and listening communication skills; work effectively with diverse backgrounds.
Work independently, self‑motivated; manage multiple competing priorities; function well under time pressure.
Exceptional interpersonal skills to interact with difficult individuals.
Familiar with correct use of legal terminology and case management techniques.
