Job Description Basic Purpose

– This is an advanced‑level field position, working largely independently, to lead seasonal biological collections and guide citizen scientist volunteers as they learn and continue to monitor streams. The role also supports critical Blue Thumb program functions, including promotion, organization/entry of field data, and volunteer coordination. Fieldwork is conducted year‑round, regardless of weather, with irregular hours, frequent overnight travel, and physical exertion. Swimmers and individuals who can lift heavy items are required.

Typical Functions

Coordinate with other Blue Thumb team members.

Collaborate with the Blue Thumb Quality Assurance Officer on the selection of volunteer monitoring sites.

Follow guidance to address data quality issues.

Educate the public about stream ecology.

Assist with volunteer training.

Effectively use and maintain field kits.

Collect water quality, in‑stream habitat, and biological data, sometimes with volunteers.

Schedule and oversee benthic macroinvertebrate sub‑sampling events.

Conduct quality assurance sessions and safety training for volunteers.

Assist volunteers with data interpretation and site evaluation.

Order supplies and maintain chain of custody for samples.

Update social media and document program activities with video and photo.

Promote the program to potential sponsors and media outlets.

Represent Blue Thumb at meetings to promote water quality education and recruit volunteers.

Support Blue Thumb activities such as the Project Wet Program or act as the BT Quality Assurance Officer.

Fulfill other duties as assigned.

Level Descriptor Employees at this level perform a wide range of tasks involving investigation, analysis, and interpretation of environmental data, make recommendations for remedial actions, and may provide limited guidance to entry‑level staff. They evaluate inspection and survey data, prepare technical reports, and interpret results in the context of state and federal laws.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Competencies Required are advanced knowledge of biology, chemistry, physics, stream ecology, pollutants, watersheds, and nonpoint source pollution. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, outgoing personality, strong organizational abilities, computer proficiency (MS Windows and Office) and ability to work independently with limited supervision are essential.

Education and Experience Bachelor’s degree in biology, geology, environmental science or related field plus two years relevant experience (stream assessment and volunteer training/coordination). A master’s degree may substitute for two years experience; a PhD may substitute for four years experience.

Special Requirements

Understanding of water quality, stream ecology, and the relationship between land use, pollution, and stream biota.

Knowledge of education and outreach principles, methods, and techniques.

Legal U.S. resident with a valid Oklahoma driver’s license.

Ability to swim.

Must obtain and maintain CPR and first‑aid certifications.

Willingness to travel frequently, including overnight trips.

Ability to lift heavy items and work outdoors in all weather conditions.
