Position Information Under general direction, the Social Worker IV A/B performs casework of an advanced nature dealing with complex individual and family problems. Duties include undertaking intensive treatment plans and counseling requiring professional knowledge and training, and performing other related work as assigned.
Social Worker IV A/B requires a Master’s degree andCTOR in case management experience in a public or private social services agency. This is the highest non-supervisory level in the series, with a focus on adult and child protective services.
The MQ patterns of the SW IV‑B mirror those for the SW IV‑A; the only difference is one additional year of experience.
A Social Worker IV differs from the next higher class of Social Worker Supervisor I in that the latter is supervisory. It also differs from Social Worker III in that the latter does not require both a Master’s degree and qualifying experience.
Supervision Exercised and Received Social Worker IV A/B receives supervision from a Social Worker Supervisor or higher-level supervisor in accordance with California Department of Social Services (CDSS) MPP Division 31 regulations (31.070). They may also provide lead direction to lower-level Social Workers or staff.
Examples of Duties
Performs case studies for assessment and treatment planning.
Develops intensive long- or short-term treatment plans using advanced professional knowledge.
Ensures all services are delivered respectfully, culturally sensitively, and appropriately.
Acts as a casework consultant to staff without professional training.
Works at a highly skilled level in counseling, protective services, medical social work, family services, community organization, and research.
Provides marital, family, inter-relationship, and protective services counseling for children or adults incapable of self-care.
Investigates child welfare cases involving neglect, abuse, emotional or behavioral problems, disabilities, and other health conditions affecting children.
Receives reports of abuse, investigates allegations, recommends alternate placement, may remove children from unsafe situations, provides information to law enforcement or attorneys, works on-call, testifies in court, and supports witnesses and victims.
Assesses prospective foster and adoptive parents, matches children with suitable families, and counsels foster and adoptive families.
Refers clients to other staff members.
Coordinates and monitors family visitations to assess progress toward case plan goals.
Interprets and explains rules,ms, regulations, and policies to clients and applicants.
Maintains casework records and handles correspondence.
Develops and prepares court reports, case plans, narratives, and safety plans in automated systems.
Operates a personal computer and other office equipment; enters and retrieves data from systems.

The examination assesses knowledge, skill, abilities, and potential to perform the duties relative to the classification. All applicants must complete the entire examination. Candidates must score at least 70% to qualify for the eligible list.
Eligible List Information A departmental eligible list for Del Norte will be established and used for 12 months unless changed.
Retest Period Once an examination is taken, retesting is prohibited for six (attrib) months from the eligibility date.
