Position Overview
The City of Kenosha is hiring a Mechanic for its Fleet Division in the Public Works Department. The role involves maintaining and repairing City vehicles, light and heavy trucks, off‑road equipment, turf tractors, and contractor equipment, along with welding, fabricating, and diagnostic testing. The incumbent works under general supervision and reports on adherence to established policies.
Key Responsibilities
Receive and complete work orders, repairing vehicles and equipment as assigned.
Record parts used, work completed, and time spent on assignments.
Diagnose problems and perform repairs on hydraulic, air conditioning, and electronic systems in City equipment.
Conduct welding and fabricating work on vehicles, equipment, and facilities as needed.
Perform preventive maintenance per manufacturer recommendations.
Repair light and heavy, on‑road and off‑road equipment, including 2‑ and 4‑cycle engine equipment.
Test vehicles and equipment after repairs.
Respond to service calls; operate nail and heavy‑duty wreckers as required.
Maintain inventory, order parts, and stock supplies.
Assist in snow and ice control activities and operate a forklift for various tasks.
Perform other related duties as required.
Qualifications & Requirements
Age 18 or older.
High school diploma, HSED, or GED.
Minimum three (3) years of automotive, heavy equipment, or mechanical maintenance experience; equivalent training and experience may be considered.
Valid Class A/B/C commercial driver’s license (CDL) with air‑brake and tank vehicle (N) endorsements; hazardous materials endorsement desired but optional.
Valid regular driver’s license with a good driving record.
Pass criminal background check, motor vehicle record review, DOT testing records review, and post‑offer medical assessment.
Knowledge of automotive, CNG, and diesel mechanical, electronic, computer‑controlled systems, and electrical troubleshooting.
Basic fluid power theory and diagnosis for mobile and stationary systems.
Proficiency with shop tools, equipment, and safe work practices.
Ability to diagnose and perform routine and complex maintenance on automobiles, trucks, emergency vehicles, and heavy equipment.
Strong communication skills, both oral and written.
Capacity to work cooperatively with others and the general public.
Ability to manage stress and perform under demanding conditions.
Physical & Environmental Requirements
Continuous operation of hand and power tools; full coordination of sensory and manipulative ability required.
Occasional heavy lifting or moving; emphasis on coordination and manipulation skills.
Adverse environmental conditions (including snow, ice, and emergencies multiple days in a row).
Visual, color, depth, texture, sound, and odor perception and discrimination required.
