Job Title: Director of Purchasing Number of Openings : 2
Location : Onsite – Virginia Transformer manufacturing facilities
Reports To : VP Supply Chain
Position Summary Virginia Transformer is hiring two senior Purchasing leaders to strengthen and scale our supply chain organization during a period of sustained growth. These roles require deep, hands‑on experience in supply chain purchasing within complex, engineered manufacturing environments. This is not a stretch or promotional role— we are seeking proven leaders with the judgment, technical knowledge, and supplier acumen to immediately own purchasing strategy, execution, and results.
The Director (or Senior Manager) of Purchasing will be responsible for end‑to‑end purchasing leadership across assigned commodities or business units, with accountability for cost, supplier performance, inventory health, and cross‑functional alignment with Engineering, Manufacturing, and Quality.
Key Responsibilities Purchasing & Commodity Leadership
Lead strategic and tactical purchasing activities across assigned commodities and suppliers.
Own sourcing strategy, supplier selection, negotiation, and contract management.
Drive cost reduction initiatives including PPV, value engineering, and supplier consolidation.
Ensure supply continuity for long‑lead, engineered, and critical components.
Build and maintain a high‑performing, qualified supplier base (domestic and international).
Establish and monitor supplier KPIs including on‑time delivery, quality, cost, and responsiveness.
Lead supplier performance reviews and corrective action plans.
Partner with Quality and Engineering on supplier audits, FAIs, and continuous improvement.
Partner with Planning and Operations to balance inventory levels, lead times, and service requirements.
Identify and mitigate supply chain risks related to capacity, material shortages, and geopolitical factors.
Support demand variability in a low‑volume, high‑mix manufacturing environment.
Cross‑Functional Collaboration
Work closely with Engineering on BOM accuracy, design changes, and make vs. buy decisions.
Collaborate with Manufacturing and Operations to align purchasing strategies with production needs.
Support Sales, Project Management, and Program teams on customer‑driven requirements.
Lead, mentor, and develop Buyers and Purchasing Managers as assigned.
Establish standard work, purchasing processes, and best practices across the organization.
Drive accountability, rigor, and execution discipline within the purchasing function.
Systems, Data & Process Excellence
Leverage ERP systems and purchasing data to drive informed decision‑making.
Improve purchasing processes, documentation, and compliance controls.
Support audits, compliance, and internal governance requirements.
Qualifications Required
Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain, Engineering, Business, or related field (or equivalent experience).
10+ years of progressive experience in purchasing or supply chain , with demonstrated ownership of sourcing and supplier strategy.
Experience in
engineered, industrial, or heavy manufacturing environments .
Proven ability to manage complex supplier relationships and negotiate commercial agreements.
Strong understanding of purchasing fundamentals including PPV, lead times, inventory, and supplier risk.
Experience working cross‑functionally with Engineering, Manufacturing, and Quality teams.
Preferred
Experience in electrical equipment, transformers, power, or industrial manufacturing.
Experience managing purchasing teams in a multi‑site environment.
Familiarity with ERP systems (SAP, Oracle, or similar).
Exposure to international sourcing and global supply chains.
Deep purchasing and sourcing expertise (not theoretical)
Strong negotiation and supplier management skills
Data‑driven decision‑making and cost discipline
Ability to operate in fast‑paced, growth‑oriented manufacturing environments
Executive presence with hands‑on execution mindset
Strong communication and cross‑functional influence
