Overview This position will float to various clinic locations. The Lab Phlebotomist – Ambulatory performs venipuncture, skin puncture, EKG, point of care testing, and registration in the ambulatory setting. Demonstrates excellent communication and patient care skills. Qualifications Certifications: Basic Life Support (BLS) within 30 days – American Heart Association (AHA) Education: H.S. Diploma/GED Work Experience: 6 months phlebotomy work experience or completion of Carle Phlebotomy in Training Program Responsibilities Performs a variety of routine and complex blood drawing procedures including but not limited to venipuncture, finger and heel sticks, and blood cultures. Ensures quality by verifying patient identification and specimen labeling. Performs point‑of‑care testing specimen processing and EKGs in the ambulatory setting. Performs all tasks necessary to register patients and enter lab orders into the lab computer system. The Ambulatory Phlebotomy team services the South Clinic Lab, Heart and Vascular Institute Lab, and Curtis, Windsor, Rantoul, and Mahomet Labs, serving patients from newborn to geriatric in the outpatient setting. Collects blood specimens for diagnostic testing, provides patients with collection containers and instructions, and performs EKGs and several point of care tests. Handles 50–200 patients per business day depending on location and works every second or third Saturday at South Clinic Lab while covering 1–2 call shifts each week. Uses two identifiers – Name/Date of Birth or Name/Medical Record Number – for patient and specimen identification. Performs patient registrations and insurance entry in Epic Prelude and transcribes orders from non‑Carle providers into the Epic system after state licensure checks. References the SCC Soft Lab Information System as required. Venipunctures are performed using a vacutainer needle and hub, a hypodermic needle with syringe, or a butterfly needle system. Complex blood drawing procedures include specialized collection kits for commercial laboratories and research. Blood cultures at Carle use Chloroprep skin decontamination and may involve single or multiple‑lumen port collection. Point of Care tests include iStat, Diastix urine glucose, and Quicktox urine drug screens. Recognizes test or instrument problems, troubleshoots or seeks assistance from the Supervisor or Lead as appropriate. Samples are processed per specific test needs – including protection from light, refrigeration, centrifugation, platelet‑poor plasma generation, freezing, and temperature‑controlled storage. Performs 12‑lead EKGs using a GE MAC 5500 HD. Participates in accreditation, proficiency testing, and annual performance competencies. Undergoes re‑education or re‑training as needed and follows laboratory and organizational policies. Completes Continuing Education to maintain certification per lab policy. Communicates information with internal and external customers accurately, timely, and professionally. Demonstrates ability to work in a fast‑paced environment. This is a good‑faith minimum and maximum range for the role at the time of posting by Carle Health.
