Janitor Position

Toole County is looking for a FULL-TIME Janitor. The housekeeping/Maintenance Department provides clean, sanitary, comfortable, orderly, and satisfying surroundings for residents, employees, and the public and promotes sanitary conditions that prevent the spread of infection and odors. The Housekeep performs light cleaning duties to maintain County facilities in a clean and orderly manner. Duties may include washing windows, walls, cleaning rooms and halls, and dusting, mopping and vacuuming.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Operate various mechanized and manual cleaning equipment, such as mops, vacuums, dusters, etc. to clean assigned areas according to departmental guidelines.
  • Mop floors, wash walls, woodwork and venetian blinds; and dust furniture.
  • Wet mop floors in bathrooms daily and damp mop all corridor floors, lobby and other areas daily.
  • Clean was basins, mirrors and commodes daily to ensure facilities remain in a sanitary and infection-free condition.
  • Check facilities for spills, water, etc. periodically, especially in bathrooms and check all vacant rooms daily to keep them fresh.
  • Clean restrooms and replenish supplies to maintain appropriate standards and provide supplies for facility users.
  • Wash windows, polish metal and wood, and empty wastebaskets to maintain clean and sanitary conditions.
  • Dust, polish, move, and arrange furniture to prepare rooms for meetings.
  • Report the need for more extensive building and equipment repairs (e.g. leaky faucets or toilets, loose tile, broken windowpanes, missing nuts or screws, beds needing repair, etc) to appropriate building maintenance personnel.
  • Physical demands and working conditions: Work requires the use of cleaning equipment and chemicals such as detergents, disinfectants, polishes, and finishes. Must be able to move continuously during work hours. Must be able to lift and/or carry 50 to 75 pounds. Work requires the ability to stoop, bend, twist, squat, kneel, lift, carry, walk, sit, push, pull, and reach. Must be flexible with schedule. Work requires the ability to climb a ladder. Requires working in damp, dusty, and dirty areas.

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: The job requires knowledge of basic janitorial methods and equipment, cleaning methods/procedures, and of cleaning materials, such as detergents, disinfectants, polishes, and finishes. The job requires skill in operating various mechanized cleaning equipment such as vacuums. The job requires the ability to operate tools and equipment used in housekeeping work; understand and carry out verbal and written directions; read labels and markings on supplies and equipment; work harmoniously with fellow employees and to deal courteously with the public; demonstrate physical strength, agility, and endurance.

    Education and Experience: The job requires education and experience equivalent to education beyond grade school level and six (6) months of experience in janitorial or housekeeping work.
