About Adverb Ventures
Every story starts with an idea, but it’s people—their craft and their character—that turn ideas into industry-shaping companies. We’ve shipped products and led teams at companies like Twitter, Slack, and Google, so we know first-hand that navigating the early stages of building your business can be the difference between startup and breakout. Our typical investments are between $500k and $5M, in a company’s earliest stages. We invest in and advise founders who bring unique insight about a market, an audience, or problem space with a drive to fully realize their vision on the largest possible scale. We’ve backed 35 companies to date as a small team- and we are just getting started. The Chief of Staff will play a dual role of partnering with one of the Managing Directors through stellar Executive Assistant support across calendar, email, travel, and logistics, and driving team-wide initiatives that raise Adverb’s visibility with founders and support the Adverb portfolio. This role performs their role with the mindset of a great host – anticipating needs and taking pride in bringing order, delight, and ease to the team. This will include working closely with our events partner for our community events, demonstrating operational leadership to build processes to help we execute our strategy at the highest level, and taking ownership of critical projects including finding and managing our SF office. Our culture values high energy, self-awareness, speed balanced with good judgment, and an appreciation for working with autonomy. Profile
Strategic partner to Managing Director April Underwood who can see around corners and make things big and small happen. Enjoys being a right hand to a founder, and helping them do their best work. Sweats the details, and cares personally about the people and teams they support. Has a lot of range, and enjoys tackling problems and projects they haven’t seen before. Efficient in communication, but finds joy in the work. The ideal candidate loves being part of a small team and wearing a lot of hats - switching context often, being rarely if ever bored, and getting energized from frequent interactions with founders and the rest of the Adverb team. Experience
7-10+ years of EA experience in early-stage or fast-growing environments, partnering with founders or C-level leaders. Experience in venture capital is valued but optional. May have held “Chief of Staff” roles or otherwise took on projects outside of 1:1 support of executives. Role is based in our San Francisco office, but our work style balances in-person with virtual. Most weeks, the Chief of Staff will be in office 3-4 days per week. Responsibilities
Drive calendar and travel support for 1 MD + other team members as necessary to optimize ROI on team members’ time. Preps MDs with context and background for meetings so they can show up prepared. Identify opportunities to squeeze more ROI out of travel through reconnecting with network, visiting portfolio companies, and attending industry events. Manage Adverb’s San Francisco office, ensuring it remains a comfortable environment for team members and guests to get their best work done. As needed, quarterback office moves. Plan and manage on-site events: manage invitations, guest lists, venue and menu selection, and experience to deliver memorable and meaningful experiences for our community. For larger events, work in partnership with our Events Planner; in other cases, execute solo. Be a quick and clear communicator across all communication channels. Build processes to streamline work and reduce communication overhead for fund operations. Manage digital assets across Google Drive and other services to keep the team organized and compliant. Assist with monthly expense categorization and receipt collection for the team. Build out and maintain network CRM to help team maintain and build relationships with founders, co-investors, and operators. Represent the firm extremely well in interactions with founders, network, and LPs. Have experience working within Google Suite, Ramp, Airtable, Slack, Zoom and using tools like ChatGPT (and other LLMs), Luma, Docusign, and other emergent AI-powered tools for work. Individuals seeking employment at Adverb Ventures are considered without regards to race, color, religion, national origin, age, sex, marital status, ancestry, physical or mental disability, veteran status, gender identity, or sexual orientation.
