Sr. Software Engineer - Systems & Rendering Performance (Freeform), Vision Products Software
Seattle, Washington, United States Software and Services
The visionOS Freeform team is looking for a senior engineer to deliver smooth, responsive, and power-efficient spatial experiences on Apple Vision Pro. This role focuses on rendering performance, frame pacing, and cross-layer systems debugging in close partnership with platform and performance teams across Apple. The work spans application behavior, system scheduling, memory, and rendering, with an emphasis on translating real-world usage into durable, production-ready improvements. As the product and platform mature, this role is expected to evolve and contribute broadly to complex systems challenges across visionOS, iOS, and macOS.
Description You will work at the intersection of application behavior, rendering, and system infrastructure, investigating performance and power issues and driving high-impact fixes. You will translate architectural direction into concrete execution, influence technical decisions through careful measurement and engineering judgment, and raise quality through code reviews, design discussions, and mentorship.
Responsibilities
Design, implement, and maintain performance-critical systems related to rendering, frame scheduling, and responsiveness for Freeform on visionOS
Investigate and resolve complex performance and power issues across application, framework, and system layers
Partner closely with platform performance, power, and rendering teams to validate improvements and ensure changes land safely and measurably
Provide architectural input to guide the evolution of performance-sensitive systems as the product and platform mature
Influence engineering quality through technical leadership, design reviews, and mentorship
Minimum Qualifications
BS, MS, or PhD in Computer Science or equivalent experience
5+ years of experience shipping complex software, including performance-sensitive systems or applications
Strong experience with graphics, rendering, or UI composition on Apple platforms such as CoreAnimation, CoreGraphics, RealityKit, Metal, or related technologies
Demonstrated experience working on rendering pipelines, frame scheduling, and GPU/CPU coordination
Proven ability to profile, diagnose, and improve performance, responsiveness, and efficiency on iOS or visionOS
Experience debugging issues across layers including rendering, scheduling, memory, and I/O
Experience writing high-performance code in large codebases using Swift or Objective-C
Strong written and cross-functional communication skills
Preferred Qualifications
Track record of shipping performance-critical features or significant rendering improvements in large established codebases
Experience improving frame pacing, latency, or responsiveness in interactive UI or graphics systems
Familiarity with profiling and debugging tools such as Instruments, Time Profiler, signposts, and system traces
Experience collaborating across teams to land cross-cutting systems changes
Interest in spatial computing, AR/VR technologies, or interactive graphics
Experience with Metal debugging, GPU analysis, or system-level performance investigations is a plus
