Position Summary
Attorney positions are available in the Court’s Mental Hygiene Legal Service at the Second Judicial Department of the Appellate Division. Applicants should specify the position title for which they wish to be considered.
Attorney – JG 23 Base Salary:
$84,659 + $4,920 Location Pay
Qualifications:
Admission to the New York State bar or graduation from an accredited law school and admission to the New York State Bar within 18 months of appointment.
Distinguishing Features of Work:
Serve in a confidential capacity under supervision.
Research legal questions and issues.
Prepare cases for administrative proceedings and litigation.
Provide legal research and advocacy services in Mental Hygiene Legal Services, attorney disciplinary committees, 18B panel administration, or other units.
Senior Attorney – JG 26 Base Salary:
$99,490 + $4,920 Location Pay
Qualifications:
Admission to the New York State bar and two years of service in the Attorney title or equivalent legal experience.
Distinguishing Features of Work:
Operate with substantial independence from supervision.
Research legal questions and issues.
Organize investigations and present cases before administrative tribunals and courts.
Provide legal research and advocacy services in Mental Hygiene Legal Service, attorney disciplinary committees, 18B panel administration, or other units.
May oversee a departmental law guardian program.
Associate Attorney – JG 28 Base Salary:
$110,853 + $4,920 Location Pay
Qualifications:
Admission to the New York State Bar and two years of service in the Senior Attorney title or equivalent legal experience.
Distinguishing Features of Work:
Serve in a confidential capacity.
Research legal questions and issues.
Organize complex investigations.
Present complex cases before administrative tribunals and trial and appellate courts.
Provide legal research and advocacy services in Mental Hygiene Legal Service, attorney disciplinary committees, 18B panel administration, or other units.

Location Mental Hygiene Legal Service – MetroTech, Kings County
Classification Non-competitive/Confidential
Assignment The Mental Hygiene Legal Service provides legal representation and advocacy to individuals with mental and developmental disabilities, and those alleged to be in need of mental health services. Responsibilities include civil and criminal commitment, treatment over objection, guardianship, sex offender civil management, выпадно
assisted outpatient treatment, and related legal matters. MHLS attorneys regularly appear in New York courts and may conduct fieldwork, meeting clients in hospitals, facilities, or private residences. Some litigation experience is preferred but not required.
A valid driver’s license is required. A car is not required in this office but may be required if reassigned to other MHLS offices.
General Information The statements describe the general nature and level of work performed by persons assigned to this title. Every position may not require all duties, and positions may be subject to reassignment within the same title. All applications may be used to fill vacancies within the next six months.
