Building Inspector - Part Time - Lafayette, IN
*20 hours/week*

We are currently seeking a talented and experienced Building Inspector to join our team of professionals. This position offers great opportunities for dynamic, motivated self-starters to work on a variety of work assignments. JOB REQUIREMENTS Daily communication with project team members, clients, and contractors Read/interpret project plans, drawings, and specifications Various inspections including underground utilities, road and/or bridge items and report discrepancies to Project Engineer Follow QA/QC practices/procedures Ensure work is compliant with plans, contractor submittals Measure, calculate, and determine quantities of assigned work and/or installed materials Ensure installed materials meet specifications and testing requirements Prepare Daily Inspector’s Reports and review other reports
SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE Extensive knowledge of local building codes and current construction procedures/technology Must possess the ability to positively interact with the other staff members, the general public, contractors, governmental entities, and other clientele Excellent verbal and written communication skills Good time management, organization, and attention to detail skills Demonstrated ability to exercise initiative and a considerable amount of independent judgment Candidate must be able to handle multiple projects in a fast-paced atmosphere Candidate must stay familiar and up to date with different editions of the International Building Codes
EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION/EXPERIENCE 2+ years of experience with interpretation of codes in the field providing code compliant solutions preferred
ICC inspector certification preferred
Valid driver's license with a good driving record required
Experience with the below preferred:
Inspections of public right-of-way and municipal projects
Indiana Department of Transportation Standards
ASTM Construction Standards
Excavation and recompaction within the right-of-way
Paving and concrete within the right-of-way
Public utilities located underground within the right-of-way
Reviewing construction documents and documenting discrepancies
OSHA Regulations
Storm water quality and erosion control
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS Mobility & Movement:
Frequent walking, standing, climbing, bending, stooping, crawling, or kneeling to conduct inspections.
Ability to climb ladders, scaffolding, or unfinished stairways to access roofs, attics, crawl spaces, and other elevated or confined areas.
Occasional lifting, carrying, or moving objects up to 25–50 pounds (e.g., inspection tools, plans, or small equipment).
Vision & Hearing:
Visual acuity sufficient to read construction plans, technical documents, and observe construction details.
Ability to detect safety hazards and defects through visual and auditory inspection.
Hearing sufficient to communicate with contractors, workers, and the public in noisy environments.
Manual Dexterity:
Use of hands and fingers to handle tools, operate inspection equipment, and use computers/tablets for reporting.
Work performed in both office and field settings.
Exposure to outdoor weather conditions (heat, cold, rain, snow) and construction site environments (noise, dust, uneven terrain).
Frequent driving between inspection sites and company locations within a region.
