Patient Care Technician (Gen)

Under the supervision of a Registered Professional Nurse, the Patient Care Technician (PCT) provides direct patient care to a designated group of patients. The role includes preparing patients for treatment and procedures, assisting with unit-specific competencies, and supporting the daily needs of patients in a safe, compassionate manner.
Responsibilities
Provide direct patient care in accordance with individually tailored care plans.
Conduct end-of‑shift hand‑offs to incoming technicians and report unfinished duties to the supervising nurse to ensure patient needs are met prior to the next shift.
Observe, record, and report any changes in patient condition, such as increased confusion, restlessness, lethargy, or decreased responsiveness, and communicate findings to the treatment team.
Perform unit‑specific care competencies, including turning patients, assisting with ambulation, and delivering safe transfer techniques.
Maintain intake and output records, manage toileting systems, and monitor fluid and food intake.
Assist with nutritional and hydration needs, meal preparation, and oral hygiene, including bathing, dressing, and toileting.
Transport patients to diagnostic tests, procedures, and therapeutic activities as directed.
Restock and maintain nursing servers and supplies during each shift.
Implement safety interventions and use protective equipment to prevent patient injuries.
Participate in continuing education, patient‑centered conferences, workshops, and unit or department meetings.
Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent and at least two years of patient‑care experience in a medical or healthcare setting, or completion of an approved Patient Care Technician program, or satisfactory completion of a PCT in‑service program.
Current BLS or CPR certification, obtained within 90 days of employment and maintained throughout employment.
Good knowledge of accepted standards for caring for sick, disabled, or injured patients, strong customer‑service skills, and the ability to prioritize patient care efficiently.
Excellent interpersonal skills, initiative, and a positive attitude; ability to remain composed under rapidly changing unit priorities.
Basic computer literacy for electronic medical record entry and verbal and written communication abilities.
Physical condition commensurate with the demands of providing patient care, including lifting and transferring patients up to the facility’s load limits.
