Overview
Laboratory Scientist - PRN - University Hospital, (1119). Under general supervision, performs waived, moderate or high complexity laboratory tests for the diagnosis and treatment of disease. Performs maintenance, basic troubleshooting and repairs of laboratory equipment. Runs and evaluates quality control testing to ensure equipment is functional prior to patient testing. May assist with the implementation and oversight of waived point of care testing. Staff in this job description meet the qualifications for designation as “Testing Personnel” for moderate and high complexity testing under CLIA regulations. Essential Functions
Performs, documents, and reports clinical laboratory testing with independent judgment and responsibility. Notes abnormal patient results and informs supervisor, pathologist, or principal investigator as appropriate. Operates laboratory equipment, interfaces and instruments, and performs basic maintenance procedures. Performs routine logging for QC/QA purposes; collects and compiles QA data; monitors QC for trends and documents corrective actions as needed. Performs troubleshooting procedures; identifies testing problems and recommends solutions using defined guidelines. Participates in regulatory inspections. Takes inventory and orders supplies for the Section/Department as directed. Assists with training of new staff and/or students. Serves as a liaison with internal and external customers. Participates in POCT oversight program including training of waived testing for lab and non-lab personnel; troubleshoots waived testing performance and IT connectivity issues; reviews quality performance of waived testing; participates in implementation/validation as necessary. May collect specimens (e.g., blood, urine, sputum, and other body fluids) and prepare for analysis, depending on site/department. Minimum Qualifications
Selected candidates will be placed into Laboratory Scientist I–IV based on education and experience. Laboratory Scientist I
– Must meet one of the following per CLIA regulations: bachelor’s degree in biological or chemical science; or associate’s degree in laboratory science/medical laboratory technology; or equivalent education with specified semester hours in medical laboratory technology and chemistry/biology. Laboratory Scientist II
– Must meet one of the following: bachelor’s degree in clinical laboratory science/medical technology with no experience required, or biology/chemistry with two years of direct clinical laboratory experience (or equivalent education). Laboratory Scientist III
– Must meet one of the following: two years of Laboratory Scientist II at TriCore; or bachelor’s degree with four years’ direct clinical laboratory experience; or equivalent; or associate’s degree with four years’ direct clinical laboratory experience. Laboratory Scientist IV
– Must meet one of the following: bachelor’s degree with four years’ direct clinical laboratory experience or biology/chemistry degree with four years’ experience. Preferences:
ASCP or AMT certification (various designations), ADLM POCT certification, ACHI CHA/CHT/CHS, NRCC Toxicological certifications. Certification may be required for LS IV placement. Immunization Requirements:
Prove immunity to Hepatitis B or be immunized; provide TB test within 90 days prior to hire; in departments with direct patient contact, immunity or eligibility for rubella, rubeola and varicella is required. Job Location and Employment Type
