The purpose of this position is to “seek to bring forth and establish the cause of Zion.” The Elevator Apprentice role is designed to teach and train to become an Elevator Mechanic during a four‑year apprenticeship program. The apprentice works closely with fully qualified Elevator Mechanics to ensure that church‑owned elevators, escalators, and other units assigned are maintained and operate safely and at optimum performance levels. Pay rate range for this apprenticeship will be $29.81 – $41.00/hr depending on experience and education. Responsibilities
Will report directly to the Elevator Mechanic Supervisor and act as a support role to the team throughout the duration of the four‑year apprenticeship program. Learn and assist in upgrading, installing, performing testing, troubleshooting, and repairing of new and existing conveyance equipment. Follow procedures for lubricating, cleaning, and maintaining conveyances according to the Maintenance Control Programme (MCP) and National and local elevator codes. Travel to perform conveyance work across the United States in facilities owned by the Church. Qualify for the National Association of Elevator Contractors (NAEC) and complete the education program in the expected timeframe. Onsite support for events. Learn and understand how to use measuring devices, meters, and other specialty testing and programming tools. Assist in planning new or upgraded installations to minimize waste and maximize efficiency. This position may require 24‑hour on‑call support. Performs other tasks as assigned by Management. Required:
Must qualify to be enrolled in the four‑year elevator apprenticeship program through the NAEC Certified Elevator Technician program. High school diploma or equivalent required. Capable of learning to diagnose and repair elevator problems with the use of mechanical drawings, schematics (digitally or on paper), and diagnostic tools. Can travel on a regular basis, both driving and flying. Able to learn to be proficient with computers for programming elevators, PC chips, and the use of Microsoft Office software, may be required to learn CAD/CAM software. Follows proper safety procedures when accessing elevator pits, car‑top, and machine spaces. Measures accurately and makes conversions to other types of units, linear, speeds, fluids, weights, etc. Able to understand and learn how to cut, bend, thread, assemble, and install electrical conduit and hydraulic piping using such tools as a hacksaw, pipe threader, hydraulic and hand conduit benders. Learn how to calculate wire fill for conduit and pull wiring through conduit, make necessary splices, etc. in compliance with codes. Able to work from ladders, scaffolds, mechanical lifts, and on top of elevator cars for extended periods of time. Passes all required safety and equipment certifications and training. Capable of understanding instructions both verbally and in writing in English and able to listen and ask clarifying questions as needed. Able to work in a team in a professional manner as well as alone without supervision. Valid driver's license and may be required to become DOT‑certified. Able to bend, kneel, squat, push, and pull for extended periods of time. Has good eye‑hand‑foot coordination. Must have stable, controlled hand movement. Can independently lift and position objects weighing as much as 50 pounds. Able to team lift and position objects weighing as much as 100 pounds on an occasional basis. Can work in confined spaces with low light levels for extended periods of time. Has at least 20/40 vision with or without corrective lenses and not less than 120 degrees combined horizontal peripheral vision. About Us
