Job Overview

The Formula/Human Milk Tech Senior assists clinical professionals in providing optimal nutritional care to hospitalized patients through accurate, safe, and timely handling, storage, preparation and distribution of formulas and/or human milk. Provides basic education and guidance to inpatient and outpatient families. Location and Schedule

Location: Milk Lab Job Details: .60 FTE; 25 hours per week – eligible for benefits Shift: Includes weekend and holiday requirements. Total 50 hours per pay period, structured as 20 hours one week (2x10 hour shifts) and 30 hours the following week (3x10 hour shifts). Essential Functions

Retrieves, reviews, and verifies patient human milk and/or formula orders via EMR. Prepares human milk and/or formula according to provider orders using aseptic technique. Delivers prepared human milk and/or formula to the designated locations accurately and timely. Utilizes critical thinking, communication, customer service and emotional intelligence to effectively triage formula and human milk lab calls and in-person interactions. Communicates with supervisor, RD’s, RNs, and care teams regarding concerns related to orders, mixing recipes, storage, and administration. Maintains a clean, sanitary, safe, and orderly formula/human milk lab, ensuring standards are met and cleaning, sanitizing, and disinfecting activities of storage areas and equipment are conducted and documented per policies and health regulations. Receives expressed human milk from mothers who are dropping off. Records and maintains accurate inventory of human milk stored in the lab. Communicates with care team through daily rounding to consider factors impacting feedings to be prepared. Accurately calculates ingredient components and measures all components for all human milk mixtures. Scans all human milk at intervals to ensure accurate tracking and safe delivery. Ensures appropriate education to parents for proper labeling, transport, and storage of human milk. Provides milk expression education to mothers of inpatients, outpatients, and by telephone. Receives and maintains donated human milk from the community for delivery to the Mother’s Milk Bank of Colorado through designation as a human milk bank outreach and donation center. Tracks and maintains a breast pump rental/loan program for families and staff. Maintains adequate inventory of formula lab supplies and formulas by performing daily inventory and stocking; rotates formulas and supplies using FIFO. Assesses daily utilization of formulas and proactively alerts supervisor of concerns for surges in use of non-stock formulas. Coordinates with RD’s and Clinical Nutrition leadership on non-formulary formula orders to ensure compliance with hospital formulary, secure prior approval, and ensure accurate ingredient calculations. Accurately calculates ingredient components and measures all components for all formula mixtures, including routine double check of work partner’s work. Utilizes nutrition knowledge of infant, pediatric and adult patient populations to reach out to RD’s and medical care team to clarify physician orders for formula. Provides basic education to patients and families on formula mixing instructions where appropriate and under RD supervision. Scope & Level

Developmental, standard, or intermediate level. Duties are generally repetitive and restricted in scope but may be of substantial intricacy. Employee applies standardized practices with limited decision making. Problems not covered by guidelines are addressed to supervisor. Communications require discretion and judgment. Employee works under normal supervision. Minimum Qualifications

Education:

Associate degree in a related field required. Experience:

Minimum of one year of healthcare-related experience, preferably in a hospital setting. Equivalency:

Minimum of two years of college credit in a healthcare-related field, or certifications such as CNA, MA, EMT, CLC, ALC, or Pharmacy Technician may be considered in lieu of a degree. Certification(s):

Hourly Rate: $16.73 - $25.09, dependent on relevant experience. Benefits Information
