Job Summary Provide customer sensitive cardiopulmonary care for all age groups, inpatient & outpatient utilizing a wide variety of therapeutic & diagnostic modalities.
Supervisory Responsibilities None
Duties/Responsibilities
Uses only approved abbreviations.
Understands patient safety goals & actions taken.
Uses 2 patient identifiers before giving treatments, demonstrates process.
Understands read back of verbal orders/critical lab values & can state process.
Understands procedure to clarify physician orders.
Uses standing orders when indicated.
Accurately calls report to MD as warranted by condition; reports to other providers as needed.
Reports sentinel events or adverse drug reactions or incidents as warranted.
Uses final verification before invasive procedures & can verbalize correct process & documents in EHR.
Reassesses patient in response to changes in condition after intervention as needed & documents in EHR.
Communicates with & provides education to patients, caregivers, & family members in a timely manner (using respect & dignity when dealing with death & dying) & documents in EHR.
Administers respiratory care procedures to patients per physician order.
Administers medical gases as ordered by physician.
Properly stores & secures medical gas cylinders.
Provide patient education to adult patients & family members.
Perform diagnostic testing as per physician order based on training.
Participates on hospital MET team.
Integrate use of the Cerner system into work assignments.
Access medications correctly from Omnicell.
Initiate and maintain mechanical ventilation. Follow weaning & management policies when adjusting or modifying procedures.
Perform blood sampling following CLIA, OSHA & regulatory & manufacturer requirements.
Knowledge of look alike/sound alike meds – can give examples of such.
Understands what meds can be given by discipline.
Assures meds are stored appropriately according to regulation.
Uses Omnicell to obtain waste & return medications.
Demonstrates proper use of Bar Code scanning.
Required Skills/Abilities
Completed American Heart Association Basic Life Support for the Healthcare Provider, Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Pediatric Advanced Life Support, Neonatal Resuscitation Program.
Able to operate a wide variety of respiratory therapy & diagnostic test equipment (including, but not limited to, mechanical ventilators, air compressors, EKG machine, stress testing equipment, oxygen delivery devices, & emergency resuscitation equipment).
Able to multi-task & prioritize.
Able to operate basic office equipment.
Education and Experience
Associate’s degree in Respiratory Therapy.
Licensed as a Respiratory Care Practitioner Indiana Health Professions Bureau or;
Registered/Certified Respiratory Therapist by National Board for Respiratory Care
Minimum of 1 year relevant work experience preferred
Physical Requirements
Frequent walking, standing, talking & use of hands; frequent reaching, pushing, pulling, stooping, & kneeling.
May need to lift up to 25 lbs frequently
