Responsibilities
Perform pulmonary function testing on children (age 3 and above) and adults, including spirometry, static lung volumes, diffusion capacity, plethysmography, TGV and RAW, IOS, arterial puncture for blood gases, cardiopulmonary exercise testing, exercise challenge studies, administration of bronchodilators and other medications, maximum respiratory pressures, methacholine challenge, pulse oximetry, six‑minute walk, metabolic/calorimetry studies, basic life support, and bronchoscopy assist.
Educate medical staff, new employees, students, patients, and visitors within the context of these responsibilities.
Effectively communicate with all patient‑care team members, schedule patients, maintain accurate records, disinfection and sterilization of equipment, and perform clerical tasks.
Consult with physicians, nurses, and other 찾아 professionals regarding diagnostic testing.
Maintain effective communications concerning patients’ test results according to department procedures.
Assume leadership of the lab in the absence of the Senior Technologist.
Plan and assign shift workload according to schedule and staff skills.
Assist in orientation and instruction of students, new employees, and/or special programs.
Provide instruction consistent with department policy.
Perform arterial blood gas punctures and assist with fiberoptic bronchoscopy as required.
Determine equipment operational status and follow established policy and procedure, adjusting as necessary.
Participate in quality management and performance improvement activities.
Collect data on all quality management measures.
Maintain all clinical competencies up to date and complete with at least minimal passing scores.
Complete all online competencies as they become due.
May assist and/or perform chaperone duties for patient medical procedures as needed.
Qualifications
Education
High school diploma or equivalent. College level courses in science and mathematics. Graduate of an approved school of Respiratory Therapy or Cardiopulmonary Technology for hires after 1‑1‑2010.
Experience
1‑3 years experience working in Pulmonary Function.
Licensure
Presently holding RPFT or RRT credentials. Any incumbent hired on or after 01/01/2010 must maintain a Connecticut RCPT license.
Special Skills
Strong mathematical and science background, one year of college level courses in science and math is desirable. Excellent computer skills. Ability to troubleshoot equipment and work with testing and scheduling applications.
Physical Demand
MMR is required. Varivax (chicken pox vaccine) or evidence of prior chicken pox Born required. Hepatitis B (or signed declination) is required for those with potential exposure to blood/body fluids. Tdap and influenza vaccination are strongly encouraged. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. They are occasionally required to sit; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. They must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. The employee is regularly exposed to fumes or airborne particles. They are occasionally exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock, and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
