Position Summary City of Fort Lauderdale Paramedics/Firefighters protect and preserve life and property by responding to emergencies, performing firefighting/rescue tasks and providing emergency medical care. Hazardous tasks under emergency conditions may involve extreme physical exertion, heat, noxious smoke, zero visibility and mental concentration.

Qualifications

Be at least 18 years old.

Be a High School graduate or possess a High School Equivalency Diploma (G.E.D.) from a recognized issuing agency.

Be a non-smoker/non-user of tobacco for at least one (1) year prior to application and agree not to use tobacco on or off duty during tenure.

Not have been convicted of a misdemeanor or felony related to certification or perjury, or a crime punishable by imprisonment of 1 year or more, and not dishonorably discharged from the Armed Forces.

Possess a State of Florida Certificate of Compliance, Certificate of Statutory Compliance or Certificate of Training for Firefighters.

Possess a State of Florida Paramedic License.

Possess an American Heart Association BLS – CPR & AED card or BLS for Healthcare Provider card by American Red Cross.

Possess an American Heart Association ACLS card.

Possess an Emergency Vehicle Operator License (EVOC).

Be able to pass a Broward College administered Water Survival Exercise (Swim Test).

Be able to pass a Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) within one year prior to employment start date.

Disqualifying Conditions

Use of illegal drugs or tobacco within one year of the application date.

Any use of illegal drugs after being employed by a fire agency or in a firefighting/medic capacity.

Accumulation of eight (8) points or more within the past 36 months; or four (4) or more moving violations within 36 months (regardless of adjudication withheld) and no more than one (1) moving violation in the six months prior to application.

A suspension of driver’s license within the past 36 months.

A conviction (or pending case) for DUI, DWI, or Hit and Run within the past five (5) years.

Any significant negative driving history determined by management review.

Application Process Applicants who qualify will undergo a selection process that may include written tests, interviews, background checks, medical examination, and drug screening. Successful candidates may also be required to submit the required documents listed in the City’s online application portal.
