Carnegie Council is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit institution that works to empower ethics globally by identifying and addressing the most critical ethical issues of today and tomorrow. From our Global Ethics Hub in New York City, the Council identifies emerging ethical issues; convenes leading practitioners, academics, and next-gen leaders; builds active communities by embracing multilateralism and exploring shared values; and frames ethical perspectives by educating and engaging with audiences around the world. Founded by Andrew Carnegie over a century ago, the Council is the only nonpartisan institution working to empower ethics in international relations and defend the moral principles of democracy, humanitarianism, international cooperation, and fidelity.
The Deputy Director of Communications is a senior position responsible for supporting the strategy and execution of the Council’s publications, multimedia, events, and communications activities. Reporting to the Director of Communications, the Deputy Director oversees content production and promotion, audience mapping and community engagement, and editorial standards across the Council’s core issue areas, including applied ethics, peace and security, emerging technology, migration, and climate change. This role is designed for an experienced content creator, storyteller, and manager who brings exceptional judgment, deep intellectual curiosity, attention to detail, and accountability to complex global-scale work.
Key Responsibilities
Content Production & Promotion: Engage with Council subject-matter experts (staff, fellows, guests, journal contributors) to distill key insights, unlock new narrative opportunities, and produce thought‑leadership content for public consumption. Coordinate with and support the Council’s Communications team in the production and promotion of content across owned platforms, including editorial, digital, audio, video, and social media. Ensure content is accurate, accessible, timely, and aligned with institutional standards and priorities. Innovate on content creation to ensure best‑in‑class storytelling that drives engagement and opens pathways to new communities for the Council. Work across issue areas, including emerging technology, climate change, migration, and peace and security, to support the translation of complex ethical issues into accessible public‑facing content. Institutional Coordination: Coordinate with senior staff across departments, including Programs, Development, Ethics & International Affairs journal, and the Office of the President. Support alignment between communications activities, fundraising initiatives, editorial calendars, and executive‑level messaging. Manage and mentor a team of direct reports and collaborate with the Director of Communications on the construction and tracking of the department’s annual budget. Audience Strategy & Distribution: Support audience mapping and targeting efforts across owned channels: website, CRM/email, social media. Implement publication and promotion approaches that connect content to priority audiences in policy, academia, media, and civil society. Work with the Council’s digital team to monitor performance metrics and audience engagement data to inform tactical adjustments and quarterly strategic reviews. Editorial & Brand Standards: Apply and maintain the Council’s editorial guidelines and brand standards across content and owned ecosystems. Work with the Council’s editor and program teams to conduct editorial review and quality control to ensure consistency of voice, tone, and accuracy. Streamline senior review and distribution processes for high‑visibility content across Programs, Development, and the Office of the President. Community Engagement: Support efforts to cultivate and maintain an engaged global community (virtual and in person) around the Council’s core issue areas. Assist with engagement strategies that connect content, events, and digital programming. Engage professionally as a representative of the Council with global audiences across digital platforms and in‑person forums. Operations & Events: Manage Communications team members, freelancers, and vendors in accordance with institutional policies. Drive timelines, workflows, and multiple concurrent projects with strong attention to detail. Attend and support Council public events held onsite at our Global Ethics Hub, including early‑morning and evening programs, on average, approximately four times per quarter, in coordination with relevant teams. Experience & Qualifications
8–12 years of experience in communications, editorial, public affairs, or a related field, preferably within international relations, policy, media, or mission‑driven organizations. Proven track record of crafting impactful narratives, identifying audiences, and driving engagement on complex issues relevant to geopolitics. Exceptional judgment, deep intellectual curiosity, attention to detail, and accountability to complex global‑scale work Top‑tier organizational skills and ability to manage multiple competing priorities. History of developing new relationships at the individual and institutional levels with media, conferences, higher education, think tanks, and nonprofits. Minimum of four years of experience directly managing staff. Undergraduate degree with an advanced degree preferred in communications, journalism, international relations, public policy, global security, or related field. Technical Skills
& Experience (Nice to Have)
Familiarity with LLM‑enabled tools for research, editing, analysis, or workflow support, with awareness of ethical considerations. Experience supporting YouTube optimization, growth, and audience development. Experience supporting podcast production and growth. Understanding of Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning (MEL) approaches and data visualization techniques. Working knowledge of SEO optimization and content discoverability. Experience building communities within LinkedIn and emerging platforms such as BlueSky and Substack. Proficiency with Microsoft Office and SharePoint. Compensation and Benefits:
Carnegie Council offers a competitive salary; three weeks’ paid vacation per year plusadditional sick and personal leave time; health, dental, and vision plans; and generous 401k contributions. Salary Range $115,000 - $125,000
