Overview Under general supervision, performs skilled and semi-skilled carpentry and maintenance work in support of County maintenance and construction projects. Work involves performing a variety of repairs and maintenance on County‑owned buildings and structures. Employee is responsible for repairing, altering and maintaining buildings, structures and fixtures to include plumbing systems, electrical systems and equipment, heating and cooling systems, etc.; and assisting with the completion of construction tasks. Reports to the Maintenance Superintendent.

Responsibilities

Performs skilled carpentry and renovation work in the construction, repair, alteration or installation of floors, roofs, stairways, walls, ceilings, partitions, closets, doors, windows and screens, furniture, and related hardware; sands, seals and finishes woodwork; seals interior walls, exterior siding, and roofs; hangs and finishes sheetrock, paneling, wallpaper, tile and moldings; installs glass panes; may install suspended ceiling grids and tiles; installs ceiling fans; performs caulking and painting.

Orders and procures materials and supplies necessary for job completion.

Performs emergency structural repairs in situations that pose a threat to the safety and health of employees and the public.

Maintains plumbing systems; installs plumbing materials according to established plumbing and building codes; performs maintenance and repair work for water, wastewater, air and related systems including pipes, sinks, sewers, vents, toilet fixtures, hot water heaters and other fixtures; and performs preventive maintenance on plumbing systems; cuts and threads pipe; operates hand and power tools and equipment; performs welding on plumbing and related equipment.

Maintains and repairs electrical systems and components; replaces or repairs motors, ballasts, fixtures and light bulbs.

Maintains heating and cooling equipment; operates heating and cooling systems, and repairs and checks work.

Drives truck to procure supplies from local vendors; operates forklift as requested.

Maintains operational readiness and cleanliness of shop tools and vehicles.

Installs and routes computer cables; installs dedicated circuit receptacles.

Performs other related work as required.

Qualifications

Graduation from high school and 1 to 2 years of experience in the carpentry and/or allied building trades field; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities.

Possession of an appropriate valid North Carolina driver's license.
