Pharmacy Tech Specialist – Oncology
Location:
Trinity Health
Position Purpose Under the direction of a Registered Pharmacist, assists pharmacists in preparing and distributing oncology medications, sterile chemotherapy admixtures, and maintaining patient records and drug inventory.
Performs all job functions of the Pharmacy Technician Specialist as needed/appropriate for the Oncology Infusion Pharmacy. Performs advanced pharmacy supportive functions requiring a high level of technical skill, independent judgment, and knowledge of hazardous drug preparation. Demonstrates performance that consistently meets quality assurance standards, regulatory requirements, and safety expectations. The consequences of a compounding or drug selection error, if undetected, could result in serious patient injury.

Required Education, Experience and Certification/Licensure Education:
High School Diploma
Experience:
Minimum 6 months of sterile compounding experience preferred. Oncology or hazardous drug.stage compounding experience preferred.
Licensure:
Current State of Michigan Pharmacy Technician License required. National certification preferred.
Required Skills and Abilities
Interpersonal skills necessary to communicate effectively within the Pharmacy department, oncology nursing, and support staff.
Pharmaceutical knowledge appropriate for a certified pharmacy technician supporting oncology infusion services.
Ability to maintain concentration and precise attention to detail miy hazardous compounding and medication preparation.
Advanced computer skills to operate oncology EMR systems, retrieve data, generate reports, and perform online functions.
Ability to perform in a high‑acuity, fast‑paced oncology setting with critical time constraints.
In addition to the Pharmacy Technician Specialist responsibilities, the Oncology Infusion Pharmacy Technician Specialist is also responsible to:
1. Prepare Sterile IV and Chemotherapy Admixtures for Oncology Infusion Patients
Interpret and follow complex chemotherapy regimens, infusion protocols, and compounding formulas.
Maintain advanced knowledge of all clean room equipment, cleaning, and associated policies and procedures (USP 797/800).
Ensure appropriate NDC products are selected for compounding and support accurate documentation for chargeEXIT capture and compliance.
Maintain advanced understanding of drug stability, compatibility, beyond‑use dating, and safe storage requirements for oncology admixtures.
Maintain advanced knowledge of labeling standards for chemotherapy and supportive infusion medications.
2. Prepare Hazardous Drugs Used in Oncology Treatment
Maintain competencies related to hazardous drug handling, closed‑system transfer devices (CSTDs), and USP safety standards.
Interpret and follow complex instructions for mixing hazardous chemistry and biologic agents.
Utilize appropriate PPE and engineering controls to ensure safe preparation and minimize contamination risks.
3. Oncology Billing & Charge Capture Support
Assist with audit and charge correction for oncology infusion medications.
4. Assist with Drug Ordering and Inventory Functions as Needed
Monitor par levels of chemotherapy agents, biologics, supportive medications, and compанада supplies.
Receive, store, and handle hazardous drugs in accordance with USP requirements.
Rotate stock and manage medication expiration to minimize waste and ensure safe availability.
Complexity of Work
Ability to perform algebraic calculations required for chemotherapy dosing, dilution, and sterile compounding.
Ability to maintain focus and attention to detail for up to 100% of working time, given the critical nature of hazardous drug preparation.
Must maintain competency in aseptic technique, hazardous drug handling, and oncology infusion workflows.
