Summary of the role We are seeking a Project Based Installer to join our NorCal team, helping to bring solar energy to underserved communities across the country. The Solar Installer will be responsible for assisting with the installation of photovoltaic (PV) and battery (BESS) systems on residential and commercial properties, working alongside tribal workforce trainees, volunteers, and GRID Alternatives staff.
What you will be doing (essential responsibilities)
Solar Installation & Technical Support
Assist in the installation of rooftop and ground-mounted solar PV systems in NorCal communities.
Mount and wire solar panels, inverters, and other system components according to project specifications.
Follow all safety procedures, ensuring compliance with OSHA and NEC standards.
Troubleshoot and assist in resolving any technical issues that arise during installations.
Maintain tools, equipment, and job site organization to ensure efficient workflow.
Logistics & Site Coordination
Support site preparation, including staging materials and ensuring all necessary tools are available.
Assist in loading, unloading, and transporting materials to job sites.
Maintain a clean and safe work area at all times.
Qualifications
1-2 years of hands-on experience in solar installation, electrical work, or construction.
Technical Knowledge: Basic understanding of solar PV systems and installation techniques.
Physical Ability: Ability to lift up to 70 lbs, work on rooftops, and perform tasks in various weather conditions.
Safety Awareness: Understanding of basic safety protocols; commitment to maintaining a safe job site.
Travel & Flexibility: Willingness to travel extensively (up to 75%) to project sites in NorCal
Teamwork & Communication: Strong ability to work collaboratively in a team setting with diverse groups.
Driver\’s License: Valid driver\’s license with a clean driving record
Preferred Qualifications
Passion for sustainability, affordable housing, the environment, or environmental justice, or just generally grounded in making the world a better place
Ability to work well with others and demonstrate a safe and positive construction site.
OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification preferred; NABCEP Associate Certification is a plus.
Benefits Compensation:
The compensation range for this full-time position is $24-$28 per hour. The base pay that will actually be offered will vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, location, experience and take into account internal equity.

Oakland/Bay Area . This position may require up to 25% out-of-town travel to regional offices and special projects such as org-wide celebrations, team building exercises, etc. Availability to work nights and weekends may very rarely be required. GRID Alternatives may provide vehicles for work travel and/or travel reimbursement for personal vehicle use. In this instance, applicants must hold a valid driver’s license and have a good driving record.
