Description About the Role Join one of the most diverse and innovative engineering design teams with multiple specialties within the transportation sector. The Port Authority’s airports, ports, ferries, tunnels, bridges, bus terminals and rail transportation systems are important transportation links in the region. The Mechanical Engineering unit within the Engineering/Architecture Design Division serves a unique role within the Port Authority by providing engineering planning and design services throughout the Agency with close coordination with external and internal stakeholders. Reporting to the Principal Mechanical Engineer, the Senior Mechanical Engineer (Plumbing/Fire Protection) will be performing the plumbing and fire protection systems design for buildings and structures at various Port Authority facilities. Responsibilities also include the preparation of mechanical engineering (Plumbing/Fire Protection) studies, contract drawings, technical specifications, and construction cost estimates; evaluate project scopes, develop design criteria, budgets for design services, and design schedules; audit mechanical engineering (Plumbing/Fire Protection) designs performed by consultants; provide technical advice and assistance to facility and other Port Authority personnel; lead project teams in the preparation of mechanical engineering (Plumbing/Fire Protection) designs including preparation of request for proposals (RFP), design coordination, status reporting, schedule reporting, budget reporting, and brief senior staff.

Responsibilities As a member of the Mechanical Engineering Design Division, the Senior Mechanical (Plumbing/Fire Protection) Engineer will be responsible for professional design services including:

Produce quality design services conforming to applicable design standards, guidelines and/favicon codes.

Prepare contract documents consisting of drawings, technical specifications and construction cost estimates. Produce biddable and constructible contract drawings meeting the scope.

Prepare the mechanical engineering scope of work and budget for projects or studies.

Provide guidance and direction to junior staff in engineering design approach and plumbing and fire protection systems and code requirements.

Perform site inspections and equipment condition assessment at the Agency’s facilities.

Prepare RFP scope of work and independent staff cost estimate for professional engineering services to be performed by Consultant engineers.

Audit consultant engineering studies, designs and contract documents for construction projects.

Perform commissioning of plumbing/fire protection systems.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or Fire Protection Engineering from an ABET accredited engineering college or university. In lieu of a degree, minimum 10 years of experience is required.

Minimum of seven (7) years diversified experience in the design of plumbing and fire protection systems for commercial, institutional and industrial buildings and facilities.

Working knowledge of Plex New York State, New York City and New Jersey State Building, Plumbing, and Fire codes and environmental regulations.

Direct experience in the preparation of contract drawings, technical specifications, and detailed construction cost estimates.

Proficient in the use of various computer programs such as Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Revit MEP and AutoCAD.
