Responsibilities

Patrol city streets, parks, commercial and residential areas to preserve peace and enforce law.

Investigate accidents, crimes, suspicious actions, and prevent or control misconduct involving misdemeanors and felonies.

Respond to crime scenes, collect evidence, interview witnesses, apprehend suspects, and transfer detained individuals to detention facilities.

Conduct traffic enforcement, issue citations, direct traffic, and enforce traffic safety regulations for pedestrians and motor vehicle operators.

Serve warrants, subpoenas, and other writs.

Provide directions and general assistance to the public.

Assist with emergency medical services, fire department, and other agencies as needed.

Prepare reports on all incidents, maintain records or logs of the same, and prepare a variety of reports and records including officer's Daily Log, reports of investigation, field interrogation report, alcohol reports, influence reports, breathalyzer check list, bad check form, vehicle impoundment form, traffic hazard report, etc.

Maintain equipment, uniform, and cleanliness and sanitation of dormitory and cells of detention rooms.

Observe inmates in cells to assure prisoners' well-being and adherence to regulations and rules, maintain identification records of incarcerated individuals, and answer telephones and respond appropriately.

Assist other officers in the performance of their duties, assist with reports on or investigate fires or accidents, and assist in investigations.

Operate a variety of equipment such as patrol car, firearms, camera, radio, telephone, video recorder, forensic evidence equipment, breathalyzer machine, tape recorder, computer, fire extinguisher, copying machine, typewriter, fax machine, and traffic control equipment.

Use a variety of tools and supplies such as handcuffs, caution sign, ladder, map, protective clothing, ticket book, flashlight, Federal/State/local statute books, manuals, forms, log books, charts, diagrams, reference books, etc.

Perform escort services for funerals, deliver meals to prisoners, and coordinate activities with other officers or other city departments as needed.

Maintain uniform and equipment, and perform other related duties as required.

Qualifications

High school graduate or GED equivalent.

Completion of Police Academy training or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Valid South Carolina Driver's License without record of suspension or revocation in any state.

Ability to meet Department's physical standards.

Successful completion of basic law enforcement training and certification as a law enforcement officer from the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy.

Successful completion of periodic training programs, both internal and external.
