Position Overview
The
Director of Finance
is a full-time, exempt leadership role reporting to the Chief Operating Officer. This individual will oversee all financial functions, including accounting, budgeting, forecasting, financial reporting, compliance, and audit management. They will lead a high-performing finance team and play a key role in strategic decision-making and organizational growth.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Financial Leadership
Advise senior leadership on opportunities to strengthen the organization’s financial health. Partner with executive and departmental leaders to support long-term strategic planning and operational sustainability. Present clear, timely financial reports with actionable insights for leadership and board decision-making.
Financial Operations & Controls
Oversee day-to-day financial operations, ensuring compliance with GAAP, GAS, and audit standards. Manage cash flow, financial forecasting, and fund allocation to meet operational and programmatic needs. Lead the budgeting and financial planning process; monitor progress and variances regularly.
Accounting & Reporting
Ensure accurate recording of transactions across general ledger, accounts payable/receivable, loans receivable, and capital operations. Direct the preparation of audit-ready financials and serve as the primary liaison for external and program auditors. Coordinate financial data and reporting for compliance and regulatory requirements.
Loan and Capital Operations Oversight
Supervise staff responsible for managing loan disbursements, servicing, modifications, and collateral tracking. Ensure accurate and timely borrower credit reporting and Metro 2 file submissions. Oversee CECL (Current Expected Credit Loss) methodology and reserving processes.
Risk and Compliance Management
Maintain robust internal controls and procedures across all financial operations. Manage business liability insurance, including D&O, cyber, and fraud coverage. Collaborate with compliance and HR teams to provide financial insight for cross-functional initiatives.
Team Development and Leadership
Lead and develop finance and capital operations teams, including performance management and goal alignment. Support cross-departmental collaboration and provide mentorship to team members. Contribute to a positive organizational culture grounded in learning, accountability, and equity.
Requirements
Minimum of 8 years of progressive financial leadership experience, preferably in a nonprofit, CDFI, bank, or mission-driven financial institution. Deep knowledge of GAAP/GAS standards, nonprofit accounting, and small business lending. Experience managing audits, financial planning & analysis (FP&A), and internal controls. Proficiency with accounting systems (SAGE Intacct preferred) and FP&A tools. Demonstrated success in managing, mentoring, and developing teams.
