Job Title: Gifted Specialist Department: Bullock County Schools Days/Year: 187 FLSA Status: Exempt Reports To: School Principal/Special Education Coordinator Job Goal: To provide an educational atmosphere in which special education students will move toward the fulfillment of their potential for intellectual, emotional, physical and social growth and maturation in accordance with system philosophy, goals and objectives. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Create or select long-range plans and write student's annual GEP based on a review of system and state curriculum priorities and instructional priorities. Define goals and objectives for unit and daily plans. Sequence content and activities appropriately. Identify specific intended learning outcomes which are challenging, meaningful and measurable. Revise plans based on student needs. Plan and prepare a variety of learning activities considering individual student's culture, learning styles, special needs and socio-economic background. Develop or select instructional and outside the classroom activities which foster active involvement of students in the learning process. Plan and prepare lessons and instructional strategies with support the school improvement plan and system mission. Select, develop, modify and/or adapt materials and resources with support learning objectives and address students' varying learning styles and backgrounds. Establish and maintain a positive and safe learning environment in which students are encouraged to be actively engaged in the learning process. Maintain a clean, attractive and organized learning environment. Maintain academic focus by using a variety of motivational techniques. Establish and use behavior management techniques which are appropriate and effective. Establish routines and procedures and work with students on consistently following them. Create a learning climate that is challenging yet non-threatening. Maintain instructional momentum with smooth and efficient transitions from one activity to another. Meet with the advisory group to solicit input for the program. Establish and maintain effective and efficient record keeping procedures including Gifted Referral Tracking Log. Manage time effectively. Develop routines and efficient techniques for minimizing time required for administrative and organizational activities. Manage materials and equipment effectively. Organize materials for efficient distribution and collection. Instruct and supervise the work of volunteers and aids when assigned. Assist in enforcement of school rules, administrative regulations and Board Policy. Develop and use assessment strategies (traditional and alternative) to assist the continuous development of learners. Interpret and use data (including but not limited to standardized and other test results) for diagnosis, instructional planning and program evaluation. Use ongoing assessment to monitor student progress, verify that learning is occurring and adjust curriculum and instruction. Provide feedback to students about the appropriateness of responses and quality of work with a focus on improving student performance. Communicate, in understandable terms, individual students progress knowledgeably and responsibly to the student, parents and professional colleagues who need the information. Encourage self-assessment by students and assist them in developing plans for improving their performance. Administer the referral process in accordance with program procedures including screenings, procuring needed parental signatures, scheduling meetings, and all parental notification. Evaluate the effectiveness of instructional units and teaching strategies. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of curriculum content. Communicate high learning expectations for all students. Apply principles of learning and effective teaching in instructional delivery. Monitor learning activities, providing feedback and reinforcement to students. Use a variety of instructional strategies appropriate for teaching students for diverse backgrounds with different learning styles and special needs. Use appropriate techniques and strategies to enhance the application of critical, creative and evaluative thinking capabilities of students. Use appropriate materials, technology and resources to help meet learning needs of all students. Assist students in assessing, interpreting and evaluating information for multiple sources. Provide quality work for students which is focused on meaningful, relevant and engaging learning experiences. Provide instruction of safety procedures and proper handling of materials and equipment. Foster student responsibility, appropriate social behavior, integrity, valuing of cultural diversity, and respect for self and others by role modeling and learning activities. Communicate effectively, orally and in writing, with other professionals, students, parents and community. Collaborate with students, parents, school staff and other appropriate persons to assist in meeting student needs. Assist in the development of LEA Plan for Gifted Education. Provide accurate and timely information to parents and students about academic performance and behavior of students. Work with other teachers in curriculum development, special activities, and sharing ideas and resources. Recognize overt indicators of students distress or abuse and take appropriate intervention, referral or reporting actions. Engage in continuing improvement of professional knowledge and skills. Assist others in acquiring knowledge and understanding of particular area of responsibility by conducting in-service meetings relating to gifted education. Keep abreast of developments in instructional methodology, learning theory, curriculum trends and content. Conduct a personal assessment periodically to determine professional development needs with reference to specific instructional assignment. Development and implement of professional development plan annually in accordance with state and system requirements. Act in a professional and ethical manner and adhere to professional standards at all times. Coordinate the evaluation of the gifted program by students, parents, and administrators. Demonstrate attention to punctuality, attendance, records and reports. Maintain confidentiality of student and other professional information. Comply with policies, procedures and programs. Exercise appropriate professional judgement. Support school improvement initiatives by active participation in school activities, services and programs. Ensure that student growth and achievement are continuous appropriate for age group, subject area and/or student program classification. Keep abreast of federal and state laws and regulations as they pertain to gifted education through attendance at AAGC meeting and State Department of Education gifted education sessions. Perform other tasks consistent with goals and objectives of this position. Conduct Second Grade Child Find. Conduct Standards Referrals. Serve grades 3-5 in a pullout program for 3-5 hours or Grades 3-6, 3-7, 3-8 depending on your LEA Plan for Gifted, Section VI Service Delivery Options. Consultative services for grades K-2, 3-5, and 6-8, then 9-12. Provide professional development training to all school faculty on special populations of gifted learners and their needs. Qualifications: Bachelor's degree from an accredited educational institution. Certified by the State of Alabama in the appropriate area. Must meet highly qualified status as determined by the Alabama State Department of Education. Must meet background clearance requirements as specified by Alabama statutes and State Board of Education regulations. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Ability to develop and implement a Gifted Education Plan (GEP). Knowledge of child development and especially of characteristics of special education students in the age group assigned. Knowledge of the prescribed curriculum. Knowledge of current educational research relating to the instruction of assigned students. Basic understanding and knowledge of current technology. Knowledge of learning styles and skill in using varied teaching methods to address student learning styles. Skill in oral and written communication with students, parents, and others. Ability to plan and implement activities for maximum effectiveness. Ability to assess levels of student achievement effectively, analyze test results, and prescribe actions for improvement. Ability to maintain appropriate student supervision so that students have a safe and orderly environment in which to learn. Ability to work effectively with peers, administrators and others. Knowledge of laws, policies, and procedures relating to the education of handicapped students and the operation of adaptive equipment required by students. Evaluation: Evaluation shall occur at least once per year or as needed. Evaluation shall be conducted by the Principal or Special Education Coordinator.
