The Richmond SPCA is a non-profit organization located in the heart of Richmond, Virginia. As a leader in the field of animal welfare, we are cultivating a community committed to saving, protecting and enriching animal lives with a mission to provide education and resources to achieve and sustain a no-kill community. Annually, we rescue, rehabilitate and find homes for about 4,000 homeless animals while also providing our region with vital safety net programs designed to keep thousands of pets in loving homes and out of shelters. Our values of collaboration, creativity, honesty, inclusion and respect guide not only what we do – but how we do it.
Our Manager of Events leads our fundraising and community outreach events and is responsible for conceptualizing, planning, organizing, and executing all events that support our crucial mission — including two of Richmond’s most beloved and long-standing traditions: the Fur Ball, now in its 27th year and consistently ranked among the city’s top charity galas, and the Dog Jog, 5K and Block Party, approaching its 24th year as a favorite springtime celebration for animal lovers. Our Manager of Events must be a driven, detail-oriented, creative, and strategic leader with a knack for bringing people together for a worthy cause.
Essential Functions
Develop and implement a comprehensive event strategy aligned with the Richmond SPCA’s fundraising and community engagement goals. Continuously innovate and improve existing events, ensuring they remain relevant, engaging, and fun for participants while maximizing their impact. Oversee all aspects of event planning and execution from initial concept to post-event evaluation. This includes venue selection, vendor negotiation, contract and vendor management, permitting, licensing, and logistical coordination for events of varying sizes and types as well as solicitations for cash and in-kind sponsorships, in-kind donations, ticket sales, raffle sales and more. Develop, manage, and adhere to event budgets, ensuring cost-effectiveness and maximizing return on investment for each event. Develop efficient and effective systems and processes for event planning and execution. Directly supervise the Assistant Manager of Events, fostering their professional growth. Manage volunteer event committees, cultivating positive relationships and harnessing their talents and connections in support of our events. Work with the Volunteer Management Team to recruit, train, and manage event volunteers, ensuring they are well-prepared and supported. Collaborate with other Development team members to integrate donor stewardship strategies into event planning. Create engaging experiences that foster community connection and strengthen relationships with supporters. Cultivate corporate and in-kind event sponsor relationships. Assure gifts, purchases and other event-related transactions and donations are properly acknowledged. Manage the redemption process for prize and auction packages associated with signature fundraising events (which may include travel arrangements, dinner parties, use of private vacation homes, etc.). Work closely with the Communications team to develop compelling promotional materials and strategies to maximize event attendance and participation. Manage event-related e-marketing, copy writing/editing, web pages, peer-to-peer event fundraising websites, digital and print invitations, and more. Establish clear event goals and metrics, track progress, and analyze results to ensure events meet their financial and engagement objectives. Prepare comprehensive post-event reports. Work effectively with other departments to ensure seamless event integration and support the overall mission of the organization. Help maintain the integrity of event donor and gift data collected through the event website, donor CRM and peer-to-peer platforms and other sources. Other duties as assigned.
