Backend Developer
to help architect and build a robust, secure, and scalable infrastructure that supports multilingual functionality, visa compliance (OPT/CPT), and seamless volunteer lifecycle management.
About The Volunteer Metrics Hub
The
Volunteer Metrics Hub
is a next-generation digital platform that simplifies and automates every phase of the volunteer journey — from registration and onboarding to task assignment, tracking, and evaluation.
Built with scalability and interoperability in mind, the platform integrates with tools like
Calendly, ClickUp, and Trello , and supports multilingual and remote use. It’s designed to serve as a replicable model for nonprofits that need to manage cross-border volunteers, while ensuring compliance with international visa standards and data privacy regulations.
Role: Backend Developer (Volunteer)
As a
Backend Developer , you will play a key role in designing and developing the server-side logic, database architecture, API integrations, and security layers that power the Volunteer Metrics Hub. Your work will enable efficient data flow, seamless integration with third-party tools, and a high-performance backend infrastructure supporting thousands of users across multiple regions and languages.
Key Responsibilities
Backend Architecture & Development
Design and develop secure, scalable, and maintainable backend services using Python (Django or Flask), Node.js, or similar technologies. Create and document RESTful APIs to support frontend components and third-party integrations. Implement role-based access control (RBAC), authentication flows, and compliance logic (e.g., visa eligibility tracking).
Database & Data Management
Design and maintain relational and/or NoSQL databases (e.g., PostgreSQL, MongoDB). Ensure data integrity, normalization, and efficient querying across volunteer-related datasets. Support data models that enable multilingual, multi-region, and multi-program functionality.
Tool Integration & Automation
Build secure backend connectors to Calendly, ClickUp, Trello, and other platforms via APIs. Support backend automation of workflows such as onboarding notifications, performance evaluations, and compliance alerts.
Security, Performance & Testing
Implement security best practices (e.g., data encryption, input validation, authentication). Monitor and optimize performance, ensuring fast API response times and reliability. Write unit and integration tests to ensure backend stability.
Collaboration
Work with frontend developers, data analysts, and project managers in a collaborative remote team. Participate in agile sprints, code reviews, and documentation to ensure team alignment.
Requirements
We’re looking for a backend developer with a strong foundation in system design, database management, and API development. Ideal candidates are mission-driven, proactive, and able to balance technical excellence with real-world impact.

Use of Git/GitHub for version control in team settings. Experience with containerization (Docker) and deployment pipelines (CI/CD) is a plus.
Security and Compliance
Knowledge of backend security best practices and handling of sensitive user data. Understanding of data privacy regulations (e.g., GDPR, HIPAA) and role-based data control.
Soft Skills
Strong problem-solving and debugging skills. Ability to work independently and meet deadlines in a remote, volunteer-based environment. Effective communication in cross-functional and multicultural teams.
Languages
English proficiency is required, as the platform’s documentation, collaboration tools, and core communications are primarily in English.
Spanish proficiency is a strong plus, especially for supporting regional users, testing multilingual features, and engaging with Latin American nonprofit partners.

Exposure to data engineering or server-side analytics. Interest in the nonprofit sector or experience supporting volunteer programs. Public speaking or presentation skills are a plus.
