Youth Science Institute (YSI) is seeking an individual to succeed our current Board Chair after a reasonable onboarding period.The Board Chair is a critical position on YSI’s Board as they are the main interface between our Executive Director (ED) and our wider Board. YSI is a 501(c)(3), non-profit organization whose mission is "to inspire enthusiasm for science and a love of learning". We fulfill our mission by offering hands-on, nature-based, science education to children, families, and the general public. We offer School and Group Programs, Summer Science Camps, weekend Science Safaris, and annual community events. Many of our programs include live animals and nature hikes. Each year, we deliver inquiry-based life, physical, earth, and social science to nearly 30,000 pre-K to sixth-grade students. Since our founding in 1953, we have served hundreds of thousands of children. YSI maintains three Science and Nature Centers, where we deliver our hands-on science and experiential environmental education programs: Alum Rock Park, San Jose, CA; Sanborn County Park, Saratoga, CA; and Vasona Lake County Park, Los Gatos, CA. Each Center has unique artifacts, collections, and resources that connect the public with nature while teaching science. The Board Chair will be expected to participate across a wide variety of activities (detailed below) and act as one of the primary representatives, along with our ED, to the community we serve.The Board Chair is supported by a Co-Chair and a wider Board of Directors comprised of senior corporate volunteers from across Silicon Valley and the wider Bay Area who are dedicated to YSI’s mission above. Candidates must live within 50 miles of San Jose and be able to volunteer 10-20 hours a month.In addition, they must be available to meet in person, along with our ED, with City and County elected officials either at their offices or on site at YSI, participate in on-site fundraising and community events, and provide outreach as needed to our community. Ideal candidates will have at least 2 years of previous experience serving on Nonprofit Boards, preferably with service on Governance, Finance, and/or Development/Philanthropy Committees. Key Responsibilities of the YSI Board Chair include: Leading the Board:
The chair sets and presides over board meetings, sets the agenda in collaboration with the ED, and ensures productive discussions and decision-making. Strategic Planning:
The chair encourages the board's active role in strategic planning and helps ensure the organization's long-term vision is aligned with its mission. Governance and Compliance:
The chair ensures the board operates in accordance with legal requirements and best practices, including financial oversight and risk management. Board Development:
The chair helps identify and recruit new board members, assesses the effectiveness of the board and its committees, and provides guidance to board members on their roles and responsibilities. Fundraising:
The chair may actively participate in fundraising efforts, particularly in cultivating relationships with major donors and foundations. Executive Director Relationship:
The chair serves as a key partner to the executive director, providing support, guidance, and accountability. External Relations:
The chair may represent the organization to the public, media, and other external stakeholders. Performance Evaluation:
The chair oversees the annual performance evaluation of the ED and may also evaluate the overall effectiveness of the board. Ambassador and Advocate:
The chair acts as an ambassador for the organization, promoting its mission and advocating for its work in the community. Essential Skills for the YSI Board of Directors Chair include: ● Leadership and Facilitation:
The ability to lead and guide discussions, manage meetings effectively, and encourage participation from all board members. ● Strategic Thinking:
The capacity to think critically about the organization's future and contribute to its strategic planning process. ● Communication and Relationship Building:
Strong communication skills and the ability to build rapport with board members, staff, and external stakeholders. ● Financial Acumen:
Understanding of financial statements and the ability to monitor the organization's financial health. ● Conflict Resolution:
