Position Description

The Survey Data Analyst will support the Northeast Fisheries Science Center (NEFSC) by evaluating and optimizing survey strata and sampling designs used in fisheries-independent resource surveys within the Greater Atlantic Region. The analyst will assess the effects of alternative survey methods, including those required due to marine development, on the accuracy and reliability of data used in stock assessments and ecosystem monitoring. This position requires coordination with regional scientists, industry representatives, and technical teams to develop scientifically sound sampling strategies. The candidate will conduct impact assessments, analyze complex fisheries datasets, and prepare and present findings in the form of technical memoranda, manuscripts, and presentations. Additional responsibilities include writing reports to support sustainable seafood production, protected species conservation, and contributing to the scientific basis for fisheries management.

Responsibilities

Evaluate survey strata modifications and alternative survey methods and station allocation designs in the survey domain (Greater Atlantic Region), including within marine development areas. Assess the impacts of various survey designs and marine development preclusion might have on data quality for the fisheries stock assessment process, and support the scientific needs related to sustainable seafood production and protected species conservation and recovery programs. Evaluate and address the impacts of pending marine development or other changes needed to NEFSC surveys and stock assessments. Coordinate with regional scientists, fishing industry representatives, and survey scientists to formulate alternative sampling strategies. Present findings in both written and oral format as needed. Communicate scientific results with manuscripts, technical memorandums, reference documents, and presentation materials.

Requirements

Bachelor's degree in a field directly related to the task requirements. Minimum of 2-3 years of experience in the field or in a related area or of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or equivalent graduate degree. Served as a researcher or member of a research team performing research on fisheries or related resource management. Advanced experience with fisheries-independent survey design/methods. Experience analyzing complex (i.e. fisheries) data sets. Experience writing scientific papers for publication. Experience in preparing summary reports. Experience with GIS data applications Current MS Office and Google Workspace skills Hold a valid driver's license with the ability to operate a Federal motor vehicle. Proficient with PHP, PL/SQL, R, ArcGIS, and/or other programming languages Experience querying relational database systems such as Oracle
