About Us Advocates for Homeless Families is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in Frederick, Maryland. For more than 35 years, we have provided transitional housing, case management, and support services to families experiencing homelessness. What makes Advocates unique is our use of 12 residential homes that serve as a foundation for long-term stability and independence. Our mission is to break the cycle of poverty by helping families achieve lasting self-sufficiency in a supportive and structured environment. Position Summary The Executive Director (ED) is the chief executive of Advocates for Homeless Families, responsible for advancing its mission to break the cycle of poverty and homelessness for families through transitional housing, case management, education, and support services. The ED provides leadership, strategic direction, and oversight of daily operations, ensuring that programs meet client needs, financial resources are well-managed, staff are supported, and relationships with the community are strong. Advocates currently employs five staff members. Essential Duties & ResponsibilitiesStrategic Leadership & Board Relations ·• Collaborate with the Board of Directors to develop and implement the strategic plan and organizational goals. ·• Provide the Board with timely and accurate information about finances, programs, staff, and challenges. ·• Support effective governance by preparing materials for board meetings, participating in committees, and helping to recruit and orient new board members. ·• Ensure the organization adheres to its mission and core values while adapting to emerging community needs. Program Oversight & Client Services ·• Ensure the delivery of high-quality transitional housing and case management services to families. ·• Direct and monitor the organization’s unique housing program, which provides up to two years of residence in one of 12 homes in use by the organization while families work toward independence. ·• Establish and oversee policies for resident selection, occupancy, progress monitoring, and graduation from the program. ·• Monitor outcomes and prepare program reports demonstrating impact and accountability to funders and the Board. ·• Support and mentor case management staff to maintain trauma-informed, client-centered, and culturally competent practices. ·• Manage HMIS and WellSky software. ·• Oversee Rapid Rehousing by working with individuals who are homeless and need to be rapidly rehoused. ·• Oversee state site visits and audits. Property Management ·• Oversee the management and maintenance of the organization’s 12 homes to ensure they remain safe, habitable, and in good repair. ·• Work with contractors, vendors, and maintenance staff to coordinate repairs, inspections, and improvements. ·• Maintain compliance with housing codes, insurance requirements, and relevant regulations. Fundraising & External Relations ·• Develop and execute a diversified fundraising plan to include grants, individual donations, special events, and corporate sponsorships. ·• Research, write, and submit grant proposals and reports in compliance with funder requirements. ·• Cultivate relationships with donors, funders, volunteers, and community partners to strengthen support for the organization. ·• Represent Advocates at public events, media appearances, meetings, and coalitions to raise awareness and advocate for the needs of homeless families. Financial Management & Administration ·• Develop and manage an annual budget of approximately $500,000 in collaboration with the Board Treasurer and Business Manager. ·• Monitor revenues and expenses to ensure financial stability and sustainability. ·• Implement sound accounting policies, internal controls, and regular financial reporting. ·• Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local laws and reporting obligations (e.g., IRS 990, audits, employment laws). ·• Oversee organizational risk management, contracts, and insurance coverage. Staff Supervision & Development ·• Hire, train, supervise, and evaluate staff, fostering professional growth and ensuring a positive work environment. ·• Provide clear direction, performance feedback, and support to ensure staff are equipped to succeed in their roles. ·• Maintain up-to-date HR policies, employee files, and compliance with labor laws. Qualifications & Skills ·• Experience working with vulnerable and disadvantaged populations through case management, program leadership, or nonprofit administration. ·• Proven ability to lead a team and manage programs in a nonprofit or human services setting. ·• Knowledge of transitional housing, property management, and the challenges faced by homeless families. ·• Demonstrated success in fundraising, including grants, donor relations, and events. ·• Strong financial acumen with experience managing budgets, overseeing expenditures, and preparing reports. ·• Exceptional organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills. ·• Ability to build and sustain relationships with diverse stakeholders including clients, staff, board members, donors, and community partners. ·• Bachelor’s degree required. Work Environment & Physical Requirements ·• Office-based work with regular travel to housing sites, meetings, and events within Frederick and surrounding areas. ·• Occasional evening and weekend commitments required. ·• Must be able to move about housing sites, including climbing stairs, and lift up to 20 pounds as needed. Accountability The Executive Director reports directly to the Board of Directors and is evaluated annually based on achievement of organizational goals, program impact, financial health, and overall effectiveness.
