Education Bachelors degree & graduate of an accredited Perfusion Program required

Certification/License: Must have the following at time of hire/transfer - Cert Clinical Perfusionist (CCP) and Licensed Perfusionist (PERFUSIO) - Texas Medical Board

Experience 1 Years of Intermediate Level Perfusion Experience

Job Summary

Provides patient care by operating extracorporeal circulation equipment during medical situations. Helps or replaces a persons cardiopulmonary, circulatory, or respiratory function. Selects the right equipment and techniques for treatment or measurement. Monitors, examines, and treats physiologic conditions safely under a physicians order and supervision.

Essential Functions of the Role

Monitors the altered circulatory process, initiates appropriate action when abnormalities arise, and keeps surgeon and other personnel fully informed. Ensures the sterility and integrity of disposable equipment packaging. Ensures correct setup and breakdown of all equipment. Monitors cell saver and operates the heart-lung machine, blood gas examination machine, clotting time/heparin analyzer, and cardiac-assist devices. Mixes and administers drugs and solutions for myocardial preservation following industry best practices and established policies. Adjusts gas flow and mixtures. Administers anesthetic agents, blood, drugs, and fluids via the extracorporeal circuit. This consistently results in safe and effective procedures. Records relevant perfusion information during surgery; examines and maintains records after surgery. Performs quality control/preventive maintenance to ensure accuracy and longevity of equipment. Maintains inventory of equipment and supplies.

Key Success Factors

Knowledge of human anatomy, physiology, and biochemistry. Knowledge of several cardiac disease, defects and congenital anomalies. Knowledge of sterile and perfusion supplies: extracorporeal oxygenators, tubing circuits, and cannulae for adult, pediatric and infants. Knowledge of arteries, veins, organs, and specific blood flow paths in the body. Understanding pressures and gas exchange in adult, pediatric, and infant patients. Skill in operating extracorporeal circulation and autotransfusion equipment. Verbal and written communication skills. Ability to follow orders, take directions, and implement written perfusion protocols. Ability to communicate clearly and effectively during operation of extracorporeal support devices and providing patient care. Learn and apply JCAHO, CDC, and AABB standards for operating room procedures and departmental policies. Ability to work and cooperate in a flexible manner in the delivery of patient care demonstrating a cohesive team approach. Ability to react calmly in stressful situations.

Certification/License/Registration - Cert Clinical Perfusionist (CCP) Licensed Perfusionist (PERFUSIO) Basic Life Support (BLS): BLS or BLS within 30 days of hire or transfer.
