Assistant District Attorney - People's Appeal Coordinator
The District Attorney is seeking an experienced attorney to coordinate and evaluate in-house People's appeal and Article 78 requests and simultaneously handle post-conviction litigation, including direct appeals, Article 440 motions, and federal writs of habeas corpus. Job responsibilities include evaluating People's appeal and Article 78 requests made through the Office internal request system, making recommendations to the Appeals Bureau Chief on the viability of such appeals, communicating with other bureaus about requests, drafting People's appeals and Article 78 briefs under supervision, assigning and editing People's appeals briefs and Article 78s, maintaining statistics and preparing reports on People's appeals and Article 78s, creating a People's appeals and Article 78s manual, and performing other duties of senior Appeals Bureau ADA, including representing the People of the State of New York in post-conviction litigation in state and federal courts, clearly and persuasively addressing complex legal issues orally and in writing, maintaining a substantial post-conviction caseload. Qualifications: Juris Doctorate degree, 5+ years of appellate prosecution experience, and 3+ years of People's appeals experience. US Citizenship and New York State residency as of the first day of employment. Superb writing, research, and analytical skills. Excellent organizational and communication skills. Excellent judgment and problem-solving skills. Strong work ethic and ability to meet and monitor deadlines. Passion for appellate litigation.
