Job Title: Library Assistant I Substitute Department: Clinton Library Reports To: Clinton Library Director FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
PURPOSE OF CLASSIFICATION Fills in as needed and performs duties listed below, called in on an as needed basis Performs a variety of routine clerical and manual work in circulating and processing library materials and providing services to library patrons.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required or assigned.
Serves as a part of the library staff team and works closely with the Director. Position requires skills in dealing with the public, skills in writing, and skills in the use of computers, and library equipment. Position also requires a thorough knowledge of library practices, procedures, and techniques, a working knowledge of the laws, regulations, and departmental policies pertaining to library services, knowledge of business English grammar, operation of office machines, computers, search stations, word processors, and automation systems. Performs and completes all the duties of circulation. Assists patrons in making effective use of the library, including but not limited to, location of materials and instruction in the use of online databases, Internet, and other computer applications; manages the periodical collection; processes new materials; answers or refers reference questions; completes other related duties as assigned. Meets and deals tactfully with the public effectively promoting the library and its services. Establishes, maintains, and fosters positive and harmonious working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Performs routine maintenance on books and other materials, reviews books, periodicals, and collections that are outdated or not used. Maintains and applies knowledge of assigned library work and services and continually upgrades. Attendance shows the employee is punctual and works assigned shifts. Checks out and re-shelves books and maintains stacks. Renews and cancels library cards. Assists patrons in the operation of machinery in the library such as copier, etc. Instruct students and others in library use. Helps organize special exhibits. Maintains a tranquil library environment. Assures all library patrons are properly registered to check out library material. Performs a variety of miscellaneous duties such as answering the phone, etc. Maintains confidentiality of records. Conducts tours of library facilities for various educational or civic groups and interested individuals. Assists patrons in the selection of library materials, and provides reference guidance. Maintains CE training in line with state MOE guidelines. Assist in the maintenance of the library grounds, including but not limited to trash pickup, clearing sidewalks, shoveling snow, laying down salt to prevent freezing, cleaning windows, sweeping, and mopping. Additional yard work may be required. Performs duties as assigned by the Library Director.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED). Possession of a valid Tennessee driver's license Ability to communicate and work with adults and students effectively. Must have the ability to be organized and flexible. Must type 40 words per minute. Computer experience is necessary. Strong interest in reading preferred. An ability to maintain confidentially is a priority. Familiarity with basic office equipment.

Mathematical Aptitude: Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division; the ability to calculate decimals and percentages; the ability to utilize principles of fractions; and the ability to interpret graphs.
Functional Reasoning: Requires the ability to apply principles of rational systems; to interpret instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic, or schedule form; and to exercise independent judgment to adopt or modify methods and standards to meet variations in assigned objectives.
Situational Reasoning: Requires the ability to exercise judgment, decisiveness, and creativity in situations involving the evaluation of information against measurable or verifiable criteria.

Physical Ability: Tasks require the ability to exert light physical effort in sedentary to light work but which may involve some lifting, carrying, bending, stooping, pushing, and/or pulling of objects and materials of light to medium weight (5-25 pounds). Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.
