In the state of Colorado, fingerprinting is a mandatory requirement for individuals applying for licensure or authorization to operate or work in childcare facilities. The process involves a fingerprint-based criminal history check conducted by both the Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Below is an overview of the required steps:

Fingerprinting and Background Check Process

1. Pre-Enrollment & Scheduling Pre-enroll with a CBI-approved fingerprinting vendor (e.g., IdentoGO or Colorado Fingerprinting).

Schedule your appointment online; a CBI ID or service code may be required.

2. Fingerprinting Appointment Fingerprints are taken electronically at your scheduled time.

Bring valid ID (e.g., Colorado driver’s license or State ID).

If out of state, request and use fingerprint cards (FD-258).

3. Background Check & Application Results are sent to CBI and FBI for review, then forwarded to the appropriate licensing agency (CDEC or CDE).

Submit your license application within the required timeframe (typically within 30 days of CDE receiving results).

A separate application fee is usually required.

4. Key Reminders Fingerprinting is required for all new applicants, employees, owners, and supervisors in licensed facilities.

If you wait too long (e.g., more than 60 days), you may need to repeat fingerprinting.

Don’t submit prints too early (ideally 2–3 weeks before applying).

Most results are returned within 24–72 hours.

Background checks ensure there are no disqualifying criminal offenses.
