Job Description Job Title: RN - Neonatal ICU Profession: RN Specialty: Neonatal ICU Duration: 13 weeks Shift: 12hr Night Shift Hours per Shift: 36 Experience: 2 years of strong Level 3 and/or Level 4 NICU experience License: RN Certifications: BLS, NRP
Must-Have: MUST be comfortable in a high acuity, fast-paced environment. Must have manager approval for first-time travelers, as this will depend on current staffing.
Description: This position is for an RN in the Neonatal ICU. The facility has 247 licensed beds and is a Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center. It also serves as a Teaching Hospital, Chest Pain Center, and Certified Stroke Center. The unit has 53 beds plus overflow, with an average patient census of 58.
Patient types and common diagnoses include: Respiratory Distress Syndrome, Transient Tachypnea of the Newborn, Meconium Aspiration, and Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia. Other conditions include congenital heart defects, Persistent Pulmonary Hypertension of the Newborn, seizures, Intracranial Hemorrhage, and Hypoxic-Ischemic Encephalopathy. Additional diagnoses include Necrotizing Enterocolitis, feeding intolerance, renal failure, congenital anomalies, sepsis, and neonatal abstinence syndrome.
Patient ratios vary based on acuity, typically 1:1, 1:2, or 1:3.
Required skills include: Experience with EPIC, EVDs, and Camino device for ICP and temperature monitoring. Management of critical care vasoactive drip titration, invasive lines, aseptic and sterile techniques, and basic dressing changes. Ventilator and trach management, HOFV management, oral/nasal suctioning, and tube management. Experience with bedside procedures, discharge skills, CRRT, and ECMO.
Support within the department includes: Unit Secretary every shift, Charge Nurse, IV/VAT/PCVC Team, Resource Nurse, Intensivist, in-house residents, and in-house APP. There are also unit-based educators and clinical supervisors available.
The unit uses technology and equipment including EMR, IV Pumps, and breast milk scanning systems.
Floating may occur to similar units as needed.
The schedule requires weekends and holidays, as well as compliance with unit needs. RTO requests need manager approval, and travelers should ideally have minimal time-off requests.
The dress code requires solid navy or white scrubs, with restrictions on jewelry and artificial nails. Unit culture emphasizes teamwork, trust, accountability, respect, and flexibility.
